Alpari UK - VPS help please

Hi All,

I've been auto trading forex@Alpari(UK) with MT4 platform from last few months and now I want to try VPS. I found that CNS is better for VPS service. I visited their website, but I am confused about what option I should select, which is better plan?
I dont know how to use VPS. Is there any demo service available for VPS. Any totorial.
Please help me

Dont they have a "contact us" area? I have no experience with CNS. Anytime I didnt understand something or had trouble I went to my vps live chat. Its their job to help you get it set up and to answer your questions.

I have yet to find one that offers a "demo" but the packages are cheap enough that you could try it out for a month. If they are not up to your standards just switch to another one.

when you order, select "UK" in the datacenter box on the order form. It will set you up 1ms to Alpari.

you have a choice of 64 or 32 bit. Unless you are adding a lot of RAM, select x86 (32 bit) for maximum compatibility with EA's that use DLL's

the "live help" link at the top will not appear if they are busy helping other visitors. simple refresh or open a ticket...

most people hear 'open a ticket' and think you will get a reply in a few hours. Probably will surprise you how fast they come back. emergency tickets average 3 min to resolution for example.

I am a tech kinda guy, I have run many dedicated and VPS over the years. I am unclear though how to use it in conjunction with a forex account. Would I host MT4 on the VPS and then how do I hook into the broker with it?

exactly that...think of the VPS as a second PC with the Internet as your DVD drive...

you can copy the entire MT4 folder from your PC to the VM (virtual machine) in the same place..crogram files

then open the browser in the VM and visit the broker. download/install MT4 and direct it to the same folder. You will need to login to the broker the first time you open MT4 but you will also find your charts and such are still there.

then you just run MT4 in the VPS...

when you are done working in the VPS, you disconnect the RDP window (close the RDP window) instead of start->log off and the MT4 terminal will keep running while you are away.

That's not "pretty fast", that's "good, it's the way it should work"

I have a query about login into VPS... do we need to install any software to login?

most windows users will only need to download the RDP shortcut from the VM and then double click on it whenever yhou want to connect. however, if latency is very high between you and the VM then the remote desktop can seem to be slow or "sticky" because of the time required for keystrokes, mouse clicks, etc., to travel between you and the VM. in those cases, or if you are using a mac to login, then you may need to instaall VNC viewer. vnc is better with high latency conections but does not have remote sound like RDP. I have heard of new mac's using mac rdp just fine.

sorry for the delay. I was traveling to europe and have been in the dark for several hours.

I have never seen VNC outperform RDP on any type of connection. In my experience VNC gets worse with slower connections much earlier than RDP. I have been able to do RDP with a slow modem connection good enough to get things done on the remote machine where VNC on the same conection would have been virtually impossible to use.

There are free RDP clients for all platforms, even for Mac.

try running the browser with a flash web page loaded over RDP then go try it with VNC...the RDP session will crawl, almost come to a halt and be unable to use.

I personally prefer RDP too but that doesn't negate the benefits of VNC over RDP for some users in their own situations.

Mac RDP clients tend to not connect to the windows console port. this is a unique need for traders to avoid duplicate sessions (resulting in double trades) and to use autoboot. in the case of the mac's, it's not that they don't support RDP it's that they don't (usually) support RDP to the console port (that I have seen anyway).

even for windows users who don't use the special RDP shortcut, this can be a big problem. typically they will login and start MT4, etc. then disconnect....when they come back, they open a new windows session and do not see the MT4 running in the other session, so they will start MT4 again resulting in 2X the trades. (note this is despite the vps group policy)

we have software installed in our VM's that detects thi and pops up a warning in the event of duplicate or non/console session.

windows 2008 R2 is MUCH better with all of this. RDP should be fine for all platforms too.

Then there is something wrong with your server or its configuration. A disconnected session should just reconnect the same session without any problems. This already worked with NT4 TS 10+ years ago flawlessly with the official client as well as with the free rdeskdop client from the linux clients in your network and also with our Mac clients. I doubt it suddenly stopped working in the mean time.

there is nothing wrong with the server or the configuration. this is despite group policy too. it is simply the result of windows doing what windows does and a variety of clients all with their own unique setup doing something a little differently.

actually you are right about NT - I don't remember this issue with NT of course we were not focused on the console port at the time. the double login issue is a 2003 issue more specifically. despite group policy, people still tend to find a way to make it happen. we use the custom rdp shortcut and the double login defender to stop it, and that works pretty good actually.

not an issue in 2008 R2
