Not all 10,000 hours are equal. The suggestion is that it takes 10,000 for those that have worked their arse off, which most people are not capable of doing. As far as I know it's just a study, not a rule, and intended to show just how hard the elite have worked at their craft.

This is a hard question to answer definitively, Buffet has obviously made a huge amount of money, however one could argue that he is an investor, not a trader. One would also have to rule out the one hit wonders who bet against sub-prime. My picks would be James Simmons, Steve Cohen, David Shaw & Bruce Kovner. I just pulled these out of the air however, I'm sure that there are many more as most good traders have no reason to publicize themselves.
The breaking of a wave cannot explain the whole sea.

People think of Buffet because he's the biggest, and forget that he's also been around the longest. He has decades in a head start over other famous figures. I don't pay much attention to Buffet, but I'm guessing that if the famous "great traders" were given another 30-40 years, they'd make Buffet look like a chump. Buffet also benefits from being part of a decades long mega-boom.

It's true Buffet is a legendary living investor, but I don't think you'd want to use him as your mentor in the spot currency markets. He's beyond being a long term investor, he's the meta long term investor.

From the literature available that I've read on Soros, his Black Wednesday trade makes him more or less a one trick pony. If you read The Alchemy of Finance, you'll come away wondering if he even really knows how or why he is so good. Even his son says so about that book.

But even if it is one trick, owning a national bank and ending up 1 Billion dollars richer is a trick you don't top. You don't need another trick after that, it is like the perfect season, it's like that buddy who doesn't do a whole lot but he did have one epic moment. So every time you and your buddy get together, you always end up only talking about his single epic moment. Because it was so epic.

Wow! You've got a downer on someone who seems like a nice enough bloke. I watched an interesting documentary on Warren Buffet and it was fascinating not, as I was expecting, from a lurid angle but how well grounded that guy and his family and co-workers are. That's the genious.

I was looking at Coca Cola in the supermarket the other day at £1.86 for 2 litres. The own brand "value cola" was 17p for 2 litres. Coca Cola probably tastes a bit better (I wouldn't know) but it has the scale of production. There was about 10 times more shelf space given to Coca Cola. I laughed when I remembered Mr Buffet saying he was increasing his stake in Coca Cola.

Sorry.. What was the thread about again? Oh yes. Who do you think, then, Mr J?

Steve Cohen hands down!!!

Don't know why everyone think Buffet is a great trader/investor. He begged, cheated, and stole from his clients to place a large bet against the Pound. Many others did the exact same thing, some succeeded while others failed. If he'd lose that bet you wouldn't even know his name today.

Buffet is not a trader, he is an investor.....huge difference. A lot of these big names you hear are investors. The majority of the worlds best traders are behind closed doors and are names that you will never hear. IMO, you can call yourself a world best when you can make positive returns month in month out for a period greater than 5 yrs. If you can be profitable for 60 consecutive months, youre in a very elite group. Very few have achieved this feat. It takes a lot of discipline and patience that most traders simply do not have.
