Dec. 25 (Bloomberg) -- European stocks rose for a second week, with the benchmark Dow Jones Stoxx 600 Index heading for its largest annual increase in a decade, amid signs the global economy is recovering.

Dec. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Treasuries fell, with the difference in yields between 2- and 10-year notes widening to a record amount, as investors bet the U.S. recovery will fuel inflation and reduce demand at the government’s debt auctions.

The 10-year note’s yield climbed to the highest level in four months as reports showed increases in sales of existing homes and orders for durable goods. The U.S. will sell a record- tying $118 billion of 2-, 5- and 7-year notes next week.

Dec. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama unveiled a record budget of 92.3 trillion yen ($1 trillion) aimed at increasing the wealth of Japanese households and reducing the economy’s reliance on exports.

The proposal for the fiscal year that starts April 1, released yesterday in Tokyo, said the government will sell 44.3 trillion yen of new debt to help fund a revenue shortfall.

Dec. 26 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. retailers extended discounts on computers, toys and clothes beyond Christmas to lure consumers who held out for lower prices and have gift cards to redeem.

Starting online yesterday, Best Buy Co. trimmed the price of a Dell Studio 17-inch notebook computer to $699.99 from $779.99. Toys “R” Us Inc. shoppers who buy a Nintendo Wii video game can buy a second game for half price.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., which started cutting holiday toy prices Sept. 30, is trying to keep consumers coming back by offering a $50 gift card on purchases of Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 players through Jan. 1. Promotions intensified after last weekend’s East Coast snowstorm hurt sales going into Christmas.

Dec. 26 (Bloomberg) -- U.K. retailers including Kingfisher Plc and PC World targeted shoppers seeking a last-chance tax break along with post-Christmas bargains, offering promotions on kitchens and laptop computers.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Alastair Darling will restore the value-added tax, a levy on sales, to 17.5 percent effective Jan. 1, after reducing the rate to 15 percent a year ago to help pull the economy out of the recession.

Kingfisher, Europe’s largest home-improvement chain, is offering 50 percent discounts today on bathrooms and kitchen doors at its B&Q chain while DSG International Plc, owner of the Currys electronics stores and PC World, advertised ‘Beat the VAT increase!’ on posters and reduced a Sharp Corp. 32-inch flat- screen television to 299 pounds ($477) from 599 pounds.

Dec. 27 (Bloomberg) -- The plunge in U.S. home prices probably eased further and consumer confidence climbed, giving the economy a lift heading into 2010, economists said before reports this week.

Property values in 20 metropolitan areas probably fell 7.1 percent in October from a year earlier, the smallest 12-month drop since 2007, according to the median forecast of 29 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News before a Dec. 29 report from S&P/Case-Shiller. Household sentiment improved in December for a second month, another report the same day may show.

The housing market, at the center of the worst recession since the 1930s, may keep improving as administration and Federal Reserve efforts to lift sales and lower borrowing costs take hold. Best Buy Co. and Jos. A. Bank Clothiers Inc. were among retailers sweetening discounts heading into the holidays, giving consumers an incentive to boost spending.

“Job losses are lessening, home prices are stabilizing and stocks continue to ratchet higher,” said Michael Gregory, a senior economist at BMO Capital Markets in Toronto. “All these contribute to a rebound in confidence. Stabilization in home prices is one of the key things to get more optimistic about a sustainable recovery.”
