IB, mainly because there arent that many local brokerages that handle al the markets I want, and trading with a US brokerage is a pain in the ass - between having to wire funds in and out of the country and all the regulatory requirements that go with trading to begin with (especially for me, ugh), it isnt worth the trouble to look elsewhere.

Not that I am unhappy with them - commissions are decent, speed and execution is topnotch. Customer service is pretty rubbish, though.

For you?

I just downloaded alpari, and they use different timeframes for the 4 hr charts so my charts look completely different on the H4.... Anybody demo different brokers for more trade opportunities?

The upcoming Metatrader 5 has several more time frames.

Might be worth playing around with.

IBFX and FXPro are probably the two most popular here.

I use IBFX for charting and Oanda for trading.

it is, to begin with - but as you said, so are most things worth doing

'Getting Started in Futures' is 'how did i futures?!' book for beginners.
http://books.google.ca/books?id=LH19...age&q=&f=false

(i think I lied, Jack didnt write it at all - he did the tech/a book in the series)

also here
http://www.amazon.com/Getting-Starte...1853004&sr=1-1

after that, 'Schwager of Futures - FUndamental Analysis' and 'Schwager on Futures - Technical Analysis' are both really good, encyclopedic tomes. John J Murphy's books are also quite good.

Or, if you are a pf member, my ramblings on futures books are here but I cant figure out how to copy/paste without formatting going crazy http://www.james16group.us/forums/sh...6325#post36325

Joel my man, thank you. That's a nice succinct answer.

I have Schwager on futures and it's been a fun flick through. As have the Murphy books. Although if anyone is new both those books will get you bogged don in indicator garbage. The Murphy was my encyclopedia for questions like "What is divergence?" These days I use the Murphy and Joel....both equally good...

I'm probably going to get into futures next year. I am cautious with new markets just because I like to really get under the skin of what I am doing and forex still has a lot of challenges for me before I can feel consistent and comfortable. I also used to be like a dog chasing cars when it came to anything "new" in this business. Whenever I hit a brick wall, rather than waiting for everything to fall into place, I'd jump to something new. Then I read about system hopping. And then I felt like a fool...

When I get me my tradestation though I am definitely going to build in a nice weekend routine of scanning these markets on weekly at least.

Actually screw that, where's that orange juice futures one minute chart. Baby needs a new pair of shoes...

Gotcha I'll check it out for sure. I'm having a tough time figuring out when the futures markets are open/closed... Seems Some are dif from others? Dif markets I would assume? Here is the list of supported Futures...

WZ, CZ, NKDZ, EPZ, ENQZ, FCEZ, YMZ, FDXZ, FFIZ, FSMIZ, SF, CLF and NGF

I would imagine it does not make sense to keep all the indexes up, as most of 'em move together. (going back to yesterdays convo)

Futures really seem to respond to J16 well, no?

Not part of the PF... soon!

Yeah, it can be a bit mindboggling, coming from a 24h continuous contract market! Basically, it depends on the exchange and the product.

Some, like eminis and note futures, trade around the clock. Most of the big CME products are traded 23-hours, but volumes are light outside NY time.

Most follow standard chicago/NY/London hours, depending on the exchange you are trading on (CME/NYBOT/LIFFE)

Others have weird rules. Like CME corn - 9.30am-1.15pm, then 6pm-7.30am the next day. wtf. I guess the farmers have a nap from 2-5pm.

It really comes down to researching the exact contract you want to trade, and then printing out a timetable.

I think the other issue you are going to run into is that your broker is giving contract names in a non-standard way, which could lead to confusion.

Take 'YMZ' - that would be an emini contract (YM), closing December (Z), and missing the trailing '9' to indicate 2009. I assume.

Same with CLF - Crude (CL) January (F), missing the trailing '10'

Some of them, though - wow. I have no idea.

Anyways, once you have that down, either http://www.cmegroup.com/ or https://www.theice.com/homepage.jhtml or http://www.euronext.com/landing/land...o-3127-EN.html , depending on the exchange and then look up contract specifications for each one. That will give you things like trading times, contract size, tick size, etc.

Pain in the ass brokers.

Here something about myself and my work. I am a full time FX trader myself working in a investment bank and have never been exposed to FX previously. Through connections and good acadamic results, I have managed to get into this role and been put under a 9 month mentorship under a senior trader.

lol. I cant believe I missed out on this.

It's amazing how many PROFESSHIANAL TRADERZ pop up in this forum to tell everyone that everything they are successfully using is bs. And kinda funny, since they instantly make it clear that they are not, in fact, 'working in an investment bank'.

Silly trolls.

Hi,

I would just share my positions on AU and EU. I am trying to catch the main trend if still intact and betting on it accordingly. At the moment I can not see definate direction, the market seems to be drifting downwards but it is not accomponied by definate action - ATM. I am holding to my positions to wait and see.

Hi Benji, got some questions about your USD/CAD trade. When you are selling on the upper TL, do you watch the chart and enter the trade manually based on lower TF or do you just set the order automatically? Thanks

Watching the AUDNZD pair, I noticed what looked like a triangle forming on the Daily, with a better form at lower timeframes, so I started watching for a breakout. Given the triangle and the topping tail wicks, along with the strong round number resistance at 1.28 I thought it might be safe to try for that break out, so I placed my sell stop just under the hourly lows at 1.2770. The order was filled quickly, but after several hours that trade had still not gone anywhere, so I decided to go for a touch of the 1.28 level (it had already rejected several breach attempts over the past few days). I entered a second sell limit order at 1.28 even, and I was filled a short while later. Very quickly the pair started selling off, so I closed the first trade at break even and I am still in the second one as of this moment, though I have taken some off the table and moved my stop to better than breakeven.

I am still quite unfamiliar with touch trading the J16 way, and it does feel uncomfortable without a solid PA signal. However, employing all the other aspects of J16 including confluence and PPZs really makes it easier to handle. As I write this, this pair is collapsing so my position is gaining in profit - that surely helps build my confidence in touch trading, even though this is one of my first attempts at it.

I am left wondering though, is that really what is meant by touch trading? It touched (and was rejected) the major resistance of a triangle, round number and PPZ and my order was positioned to take advantage of that scenario.

Bill

Edit: Even though the charts don't show it (800x600 limit) the same level was reached and rejected back in Feb and June 2009 as well as April 2008, so that lent credence to the resistance at that level and confidence to take the trade.
