NEW YORK (AP) -- The dollar dropped Monday after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke pledged anew to keep interest rates at record-lows to nurture the economic recovery, but said the central bank will monitor the sliding U.S. dollar.

Higher interest rates can support a currency as investors transfer funds in search of better returns. Earlier this month, the ECB and BoE maintained their rates at 1 percent and 0.5 percent, respectively, higher than the Fed's current rock-bottom range near zero.

Bernanke's rare remarks about the greenback gave a short-lived boost to the dollar. The 16-nation euro slid to $1.4878, later spiking above the psychologically significant $1.50 mark. The euro bought $1.4987 in late afternoon trading in New York, compared with $1.4893 Friday.

The British pound jumped to $1.6836 from $1.6672, after trading as low as $1.666 after Bernanke's comments. The dollar fell to 88.98 Japanese yen from 89.63 yen.

In remarks to the Economic Club of New York, Bernanke tried to bolster confidence in the dollar without actually raising rates. Economists expect the Fed will hold rates near zero at its next meeting on Dec. 15-16 and into part of next year to help the recovery gain traction.

"It is clear from the Chairman's remarks that the dollar's decline is not of sufficient proportions to prompt a change in the U.S. monetary policy," Brown Brothers Harriman analyst Marc Chandler wrote in a research note.

Also Monday, the Commerce Department said retail sales rose more than expected in October due largely to a big rebound in auto sales.

The dollar tends to lose value as a result of better-than-expected economic reports as investors pursue riskier, high-yielding assets in other countries.

In other late trading Monday, the dollar fell to 1.0068 Swiss francs from 1.0135 late Friday, and edged down to 1.0467 Canadian dollars from 1.0517

FXstreet.com (Córdoba) – The Dollar is losing ground across the board on Monday as stocks and commodities continue to rally. EUR/USD jumped to 1.5016 posting a fresh intra-day high. Currently the pair is hovering around 1.5000 and trades 0.55% above today’s opening price. On the upside the next resistance lies at 1.5020 (Nov 12 high) and above at 1.5045/60.

Liviu Flesar, technical analyst at InnerFX affirms: “Uptrend remains intact as the euro managed to stabilize above 1.4850 (…) As long as the rising trend channel remains intact, expectations are pointing towards 1.5200/15 as next objective – also the 100% fibonacci extension of the 1.4480-1.5060-1.4625 (ABC) triangulation.”

FXstreet.com (Córdoba) – A rise in retail sales and a commitment in Asia to hold stimulus packages boosted stocks worldwide. The S&P500 ended above 1,100 for the first time in 13-months. The Dow Jones rose 1.33% to 10,407. Gold trades near historic highs at 1,139 and crude oil soared 3.34%. Dollar is consolidating losses across the board and after falling to 15-month low against a basket of currencies.

Stocks rallied worldwide together with commodities on hopes about the economic recovery. Equities posted fresh year highs at Wall Street and main stocks indexes consolidated above key levels. Also treasuries rallied to the highest level in months.

James Hyerczyk, analyst at ForexHound.com, comments on the rally in Treasuries: “Federal Reserve Chairman Bernanke said late this morning that the Fed is likely to keep interest rates exceptionally low for “an extended period.” These three words helped December Treasury Bonds surge to the upside. Early support and upward movement was triggered by a revision in U.S. retail sales in September.”

Dollar weakness continues

Greenback is consolidating losses across the board. EUR/USD trades below 1.5000 after the Euro was rejected from levels above, but the Dollar is still under pressure. GBP/USD holds above 1.6810. The Dollar managed to get back above 89.00 against the Yen after plunging to 88.79 posting a fresh one-month low. Currencies tied to commodities are posting important gains against the Dollar.

hey guys just woke up omg i see huge spikes in EU...

Yep, but it retrace :S and I was on the supermarket buying things... when I arrived I was +14 on one and move my SL to +2 profit, now with the down I took my 2 pips profit, and open another long a little lower

Breaking trendline....

Big support at 1.4950 right now, watch this price and open longs from here... I leave a couple open they are bouncing to 0 pips and up

This looks like the lower low of the day, time shall tell if I'm correct.

on a sidenote, I wonder if EU still intends to go up... not too sure are the big players still buying.. or what's left are retail players?

anyway i just checked with Onada broker orderbooks.. Retail Traders are slightly stacked short. This means more folks are shorting. This is a contrarian indicator means possible LONG.

btw hope you folks seen the housing article.. i thought it may help more understanding..

Yesterday the long was stopped by the resistance at the higher of the 2nd shoulder of the last shampoo in the 1h TF at 5020 ... So for me 'till we stay under I'm just shorting ... 4950 is the strong (?) support of this asian session so take care with short at this level ... Just my 2 cents.
