They get everywhere. Talk of one Asian sovereign selling EUR/USD up at 1.4915/25, another buying EUR/USD down 1.4875/85. They seem to be dictating action so far today.

EUR/USD consolidating; interest seen both sides of market

EUR/USD sits at 1.4890, where it was when I entered the fray just over 5 hours ago. We’re effectively seeing consolidative range trade after yesterdays sharp sell-off.

As mentioned earlier, and by way of a recap, buy orders seen down at 1.4840/50, some sell stops just below 40 and then further buy orders down at 1.4815/25. As is usually the case, sovereign buy interest mixed in among the buy orders.

On the upside, sell orders remain at 1.4940/50. Asian sovereign selling at 1.4915/25 was seen earlier and market may well be looking for renewed interest to surface on any extended rally back over 1.4900

Oct. 27 (Bloomberg) -- India’s central bank took the first step toward withdrawing its record monetary stimulus as inflation pressures build, ordering lenders to keep more cash in government bonds.

A wave of USD buying at the London open unwound the better tone in EUR/USD that had emerged during Asian hours. A break below the EUR/GBP0.9100 opened the floodgates for EUR supply and this no doubt kept the pressure on EUR/USD, though the latter has since recovered from the morning's lows. Sterling continues to find support on talk that the abysmal Q3 GDP report will be revised higher. European stocks have managed to shrug off their weak start and this provided the later support for EUR/USD. While the movements in stock market remain a key determinant of direction for the USD, the proximity of the next FOMC and G-20 Finance ministers meeting is likely to ensure the USD finds support over the next couple of weeks.

The next FOMC meeting is scheduled for Nov 4. Speculation is emerging that the Fed will discuss the timetable for its exit policy. It is a matter of prudence that the Fed prepares its exit procedures. That said, economic data suggest that policy will retain its very accommodative stance for many months yet and that Fed rates will remain at their lows at least until the second half of next year. This view is unlikely to be changed by next week's FOMC meeting suggesting any USD support from this event could be short-lived. Similarly, the USD may find some from the approaching G-20 finance ministers meeting in Scotland on Nov 7. The topic of fx is likely to be sidelined by banking regulation. However, such a gathering is likely to bring further support for the US Treasury's strong USD policy particularly from Eurozone ministers. It may also contain protests from the Europeans about the EUR bearing the brunt of the USD's fall. This would be an objection to the present renminbi peg vs the USD which is a topic set to garner increased political attention in the months ahead. The risk of actual intervention in support of the USD remains small at present and this suggests that while verbal intervention may continue to contain the pace of USD losses, the USD could re-embark of its downtrend later in the month.

This afternoon, US house price data, consumer confidence and the Richmond Fed manufacturing index are due for release.

Oct. 27 (Bloomberg) -- The stabilization in U.S. home prices won’t last, according to economists at Goldman Sachs Group Inc. in New York. Their counterparts at BofA Merrill Lynch Global Research see a “treat” rather than a retreat.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stock futures stepped mildly higher on Tuesday after the release of the S&P/Case-Shiller home price index for August, which rose 1.2%. Up about 10 points ahead of the report, futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average were more recently up 18 points at 9,859.00. Those for the S&P 500 rose 1.1 points to 1,067.50. Nasdaq 100 futures declined 1.75 points to 1,746.25.

U.S. home prices for August off 11.3% from year ago, up 1.2% from July: Case-Shiller

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- The market value of U.S. homes in 20 major cities rose by 1.2% compared with July, the fourth monthly increase in a row, according to the Case-Shiller home price index released Tuesday by Standard & Poor's. In August prices rose in 17 of 20 cities. In the past year, prices are down 11.3% in the 20 cities. Prices are down 29.3% from the peak. Prices in all 20 cities were lower in August 2009 than in August 2008. The figures are not seasonally adjusted.

Dollar firm as traders cover short positions

SYDNEY, Oct 27 (Reuters) - The U.S. dollar held a firmer tone on Tuesday, pulling away from recent 14-month lows, as investors unwound short positions and took profits in high-yielding currencies after a sharp drop in stocks and commodities.

The VIX indicator .VIX, Wall Street's favourite barometer of market volatility, jumped 9.16 percent on Monday, highlighting how skittish sentiment had become towards stocks .SPX and other riskier assets like growth-linked currencies.

The U.S. dollar, seen as a safe-haven when doubts about a global recovery emerge, traded firm around the 76 mark against a basket of currencies .DXY =USD. The index posted its best daily gain since September on Monday, pulling further away from a 14-month low of 74.94 on Oct. 21.

"The unwinding in short U.S. dollar positions has a bit more to run," said Anthony Gray, head of risk solutions department at Travelex in Sydney. "The correction in the euro and the Aussie were long due given the stretched long positions."

Analysts said the heavy short positioning on the U.S. dollar had made many investors hesitant to sell the greenback despite the economy's weak fundamentals.

Data late last week showed currency speculators increased their bets against the U.S. dollar in the week to Oct. 20 with the value of net short positions rising to $18.65 billion from $17.99 billion a week earlier. [IMM/FX].

Investors are likely to stay wary ahead of U.S. consumer confidence numbers for October and house price index data for August, both due later in the day. Also, some wariness among traders is likely to prevail ahead of third-quarter U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) data on Thursday.

Analysts expect the U.S. economy to expand 3.3 percent in the third quarter [ECONUS]. Anything lower, like the shock GDP numbers from the UK late last week, could trigger another wave of selling in riskier assets.

The euro EUR= edged lower to $1.4864, from $1.4872 late in New York on Monday, when it shed 0.85 percent. The euro peaked on Monday in Asia at $1.5064 after a report from China suggested the Asian giant should increase the share of the euro and yen holdings in its foreign exchange reserve stockpile.

The author of the report later told Reuters he was not speaking for the People's Bank of China, helping the U.S. dollar to rebound. [ID:nPEK275970]. Chartists expect support at $1.4830 for the euro and a break of that level could see it ease to as low at $1.4675.

The U.S. dollar was also firmer on the yen, inching up to 92.25 yen JPY= from 92.16 late on Monday in New York. Traders expect the Japanese currency to stay on the defensive on the back of a rise in yields on U.S. Treasuries.

Yields on Treasuries have risen in recent sessions due to record issuances this week and on speculation the Federal Reserve may change its tenor to a slightly more hawkish bias.

The Australian dollar AUD=D4 edged up from a low of $0.9125 on good support from buyers around that level. It is likely to be supported amid lingering speculation on whether rates will move up by 25 or 50 basis points next month.

LONDON, Oct 27 (Reuters) - The dollar slipped against the euro on Tuesday as traders took a breather from steep gains made in the U.S. currency the previous day which had knocked the euro from a 14-month high.

With few major economic data and events in the European session, the dollar hovered in narrow ranges in quiet trade. Some in the market said a rise in U.S. government bond yields helped to boost the dollar on Monday.

Analysts said the market was aware short positions in the dollar have piled up in past weeks, signalling the possibility of a rebound in the U.S. currency. [IMM/FRX]

Still, they added that the trigger for such a turnaround had yet to materialise.

"We've had a good, long run in dollar weakness so the market needs to take profits," said Peter Frank, currency strategist at Societe Generale in London.

"The market is positioned for a dollar bounce-back but we need a catalyst for that ... We didn't see one on Monday."

Analysts said the market's voracious appetite for risk seen in past months -- which has battered the dollar across the board -- may be cooling down, and that traders may be waiting for U.S. third-quarter economic growth figures later in the week to determine the currency's direction in the near term.

By 1200 GMT, the euro was up 0.1 percent on the day at $1.4873, but remained well below $1.5064 hit on Monday, its highest since August 2008.

The euro stumbled nearly a full percent against the dollar on Monday, and some analysts said the euro's retreat from its 14-month peak had been driven by the single currency's inability to sustain its rally above the psychologically key $1.50 region.

The euro remained on the back foot as European banking shares came under selling pressure after news that Dutch financial institution ING will be split in two and launch a rights issue to repay some state aid
