Someone who inherits a well established running business from their dad, life is not that tough for them.

To get a good professional job, one needs to study hard, pass tough exams and then start somewhere at entry level job.

I know some of my school mates who inherited great well set up family businesses and as a result of that, they are well settled in life.

What you see is not what is all to it.
Only people who had sat on that "chair" can tell you the reality. As I said " if you want to do it well " is different from
running the business down.
There is a saying
The grandfather who builds it.
The son who keeps it.
And the grand kid who spends it.

A constant growing business means expansion.
The bigger it grows, the more employees and more other problems etc.
If you don't grow, your business withers. Competition gets tougher each year.
Try go out and ask those owners who had grown their business.

For some yes:

Margaret Thatcher said she "hated men who aimed low and missed." For some, inheriting a business is a million miles away from self generated wealth such as growing a business from scratch or fixing a bad one which can be infinitely more rewarding than BAU. The problem is that most people don't realise the difference. The challenge makes it exciting and therefore rewarding for me at least. I hate BAU.

Trading to an extent is the same -certainly it's a lot easier to lose money than to make it, especially from a solo office without news, flow information or the ability to deal on your own price, let alone make markets or generate liquidity.

Day trading takes a lot of energy and commitment with a high risk factor -A longer time frame allows intelligent adjustment to well structured positions without the penalty of continually dealing the spread that day traders inevitably swallow. If you are a day trader look at your trade turnover and calculate 50% of the spread as your price to deal -this is more or less what the platforms make so perhaps I'm arguing that day traders should also buy the shares of their brokers? That's a different argument though. Most day traders lose money and do not remain as active clients.

Anyone consider trading as an income generator could do a lot worse than spend time with their broker asking what category of the client base is most profitable, by time frame, by product etc... A good broker will share this information openly with you. If you ask! You can then integrate this information into your own preferences and perhaps produce a more profitable trading template than simply trading for 3 weeks which for some can be a lifetime in the markets if the cash runs out!

I think that having a personality suited for trading helps a lot. If you're introverted, enjoy your alone time, hate bosses and politics, love independence, then you have a much better chance of becoming a good trader because you'll love what you'll do.

For me trading for a living will be a dream come true, i'm all of the above and some more, and i can't imagine having to go through the torture of decades of servitude to potential idiot bosses and having to please everyone around you. There's never been invented a better way to castrate a person and break his spirit.

You clearly have no clue how the REAL world works, working hard is necessary just to keep your job and sometimes no matter how hard you work you get nowhere, you end up stuck in some dead end job in middle management job getting the life sucked out of you little by little each day and you never really get ahead. This is the story of countless people who chose the career route, so if that is what you want go for it and good luck.

For everyone else you don't have to trade 10 hours a day to do well and you don't have to trade the daily chart either to only work a few hours a day.

Kingfisher, I can definitely appreciate your feelings of isolation during trading, especially when you are daytrading for 8-10 hours straight. However, I can tell you first hand that auditing isn't the non-stop thrill-ride that everyone is telling you it is. It's definitely a well paying job with great job security, but the monotony of the daily work gets old, quickly. For me, it's nice to have something a little more dynamic and exciting, like trading, to check up on periodically throughout the day.

Whatever you decide, good luck with the studying, and the trading.

What's right for one person isn't right for everyone...
there are many a successful trader who are
helping people and communities around the world
at least as much as 10 "selfless" workers in charity
organizations. The world needs BOTH of those people
and whoever, whichever you are, live it and live it well!

If you do what you like, you won't be having this kind of inner discussion.

If you get bored or whatever with trading, maybe you'll do fine sometimes but you'll do bad most of the times, so trading won't be your life support.

No matter the money involved, if you're not doing what you really like, you'll never feel accomplished and when things go bad you'll always have your mind in another way "to make money".

Find what you really like first, then find your need for wealth, if you're trading because you want wealth, most probably it won't work. If you're trading because you like it, eventually it will work, but still you have to work hard just like in any other job.

It's your life. You must choose what you like the most.
I have been trading for at least 3 years.
I have a full time job (investment manager for a private equity firm), I attend meetings, cocktails, business trips ... meet friends, socialize ...
I go out for dinner.
I love my job ... and I love trading as well ... but I only trade Daily charts and I only trade EURUSD.
I dont spend more than 15 min a day to trade.

Live your life .. and choose a trading style that fits your lifestyle, dont choose a lifestyle that fits your trading.

What I like about my fulltime job and trading is, they are jobs where I have to make decisions under uncertainties.
The art of making profitable decisions under uncertainties fascinates me so much.

I have a number of school mates who refused to inherit their family businesses simply because they are not interested in that business. They want to do things that they like.

For some rich people, money is not as important as we (the poor ones) think.

Just do what you enjoy. When you do something you like, you have more chances to succeed, and have fun in the mean time.

In the end of the day, nobody can predict the future. You might get a job and be happy, you might get a job you will get bored with it soon. You have to try and see if you like it. The good news is, trading will always be here, the markets will be here. You can always come back if you change your mind.

What are the views of other traders and full time job holders?
Why not take a laptop down to the local cafe, or take a trip somewhere and trade on the beach. Those are some options for those who can think out of the box. Trading doenst need to be an isoloted thing that leads to the walls closing in. Take it pool side, make a trade or 2 and swim up to the pool side bar and enjoy a cocktail or 10, plus im sure a pool side view would be 100 times better than a dark room with a 24" monitor watching hourly bars bounce by.

There are some pretty unique things you can do with this business. You can run a business where you need to worry about more than your personal income or you can put up with a few boring hours and then take a dip, or head out for the day. Cant say there are too many business were you can do that.

this is my 10th month trading forex and i always loss.
every time i think about quiting and giving up is more painful than losing all my money.

so.. if someone more satisfied about service career than trading, please just follow your heart or you will be suffer.

Well the more satisfying question is a matter of opinion. SO if service career is what makes you feel a sense of worth and accomplishment at the end of the day, then go for it.

I have been trading for the past 3 months and after realizing long-term was the less stressful, more profitable, less time consuming way....I decided that trading was very interesting and something I wanted to learn more about and get more involved in.

BUT I don't see why you can't do both. Depending on the service career, I am assuming civil service(because that's usually the only career referred to as "service") they have flexible hours and 2-3 days off a week. So you could theoretically have time for both.

Good luck figuring things out.

I can relate to where you're coming from. Personally, I find software development much more enjoyable than trading. Programming is creative; trading is solitary and repetitive. Maintaining a nightly vigil watching charts is about as exciting as watching a defrag. So I use alerts to alert me to possible setups, limit orders for many of my entries, and an EA to manage my exits....... while I get on with my programming, read forex related material, or watch a movie, on my other PC.

Porkpie's answer is an excellent alternative: trading the longer timeframes can greatly reduce the necessary screen time.

Jacko's post #2 gives the flip side. He missed the part about no debtors or creditors, though, LOL. And also the part about trading being so flexible: you can choose a timeframe, style, approach, level of stakes, etc that suits YOU. It was reading something similar to this that persuaded me to look into trading in the first place.

The grass invariably looks greener from the other side of the fence.
