Euro jumps vs Swiss franc after SNB Roth comments

LONDON, April 17 (Reuters) - The euro jumped against the Swiss franc on Friday after Swiss National Bank Chairman Jean-Pierre Roth pledged to continue intervening to prevent deflation by keeping the Swiss currency from strengthening.
Roth, who will retire at the end of the year, said the currency intervention had become necessary as the rise in the Swiss franc threatened to offset the rate cuts.
"In view of the risk of deflation, decisive action was called for, and we will continue to pursue this strategy for as long as the risk remains," he said.
The euro rose to around 1.5185 francs <EURCHF=> after the comments from around 1.5145 just beforehand. By 0813 GMT it was trading at 1.5175 francs, up 0.4 percent on the day.
"(There was) no intervention. Just Roth remarks. The market was short euro/Swiss into the speech. I expect euro/Swiss to be capped now amid a 1.5150 strike," one London-based analyst said.
