Actually, primary metal prices are a valuable tool when gauging the economy, and in fact currencies. Greenspan used to check copper prices every morning.

Copper, Nickel, Aluminum, Zinc, Tin and Iron are collectively some of the first indicators of strength or weakness in the economy. The fact that all of these had peaked over the past couple of years (with exception to Nickel which also spiked during the Reagan administration and the cold war) along with precious metals and began their descent about 3 months before wall street retreated off the 14K range may make it worthwhile to add to your arsenal of trading tools. I know it has for me.
