How reliable is stop loss under extremely volatile market? such as in 1992 september, cable went down few thousand pips in 2 months, What level of surprise should we expect ?

My mentor advises keeping only 10 to 20 percent of your account actually in the brokers hands. This means that you can't lose your whole account when things go pear shaped.
