Hate to clutter up the forum with such a simple question but it's been a while since I used MT4 and I keep getting this message everytime I want to place a pending order: "Invalid S/L or T/P"

I know I set my stop and t/p on the correct side of the price. My situation was like this...

I saw the EURUSD at 1.2565 this morning. If it reached 1.2515, I wanted a short to be placed (1 lot). My stop was set to 1.2600, and profit at 1.2450. That message kept popping up. Is there a glitch in the system? Maybe I am missing something?

They have to be placed a minimum number of pips away from the current price. It should be stated somewhere in the open/modify order dialog window what the minimum is.
What broker are you using?
Are you entering using a sell stop order? Sounds like you are attempting to use a limit order. If the entry point is between current price and your target use a stop order. If the current price is between your entry point and your target you use a limit order.

Here are examples of stop and limit orders.. Apologies if I am patronizing you in any way but I'd bet a significant proportion of newcomers are not aware of the difference and just get by using market orders.

BTW not recommending these examples as strategies, just to distinguish between stop and limit orders.

Gentlemen,

Thank you for your responce. I am currently using FXDD, and I know all of my orders included a take profit and stop loss at least 50 pips away, so being close to the price really wasn't the issue.

BirdT, I think that was my problem this morning. I'll trying using SELL STOP next time. Thanks for clarifying and I will try it out on Monday.

I have had this problem even thought the tp or sl was way above the minimum. Seems that if you place the pending order you can then modify it after.
I am about to kill myself, no matter how many pips I choose I cant set any SL or TP. I can hang a pending order there, but I can't add any SL or TP, not even a 300 pips SL. I have Alpari.
I found a penny today. That's +100 pips for me.

Have you placed the order? Or trying to set TP/SL on a new order?
I did both First placing the order, then modifying and trying to add SL and TP and it won't let me. I tried 100 pips etc SL, it won't let me. I missed a signal, a loss, but it is worse to miss a signal than to lose.

Not sure what the problem is then. I always seem to have a problem when I place an order I try to set the TP or SL in the order window. Just won't let me and says it's invalid. So now I place the order then modify it after.

I am with Alpari but it's not a problem unique to them. It was the same with FXDD and FXCM so maybe a MT4 problem. I have changed PC and operating system since so it's not that either.

Maybe worth backing up your templates, profiles and indicators in MT4 and doing a new install. Or install a new copy to a different folder name and try that. Failing that try contacting Alpari. They are generally quite helpful but can be difficult to get hold of at times.

Ive just successfully entered a pending order. I did not change anything. Same entry price, same SL and TP and it worked... I don't know what's the problem either. And it did not work 5 minutes ago...

Yes, hehe, Alapri does not have the chat support and one has to wait quite some time to get a message back.

Do you by any chance know how to control slippage in MT4? I guess this is that deviation by default, but I can't choose half of a pip, I can only choose one pip. Search function did not help either.

Also had this problem several times. What I do, is the following:

Just open the position. and the next action is to modify the order, where I have already defined my usual T/P, S/L limits.

This is a very rudimentary system, and it has the risk that during the 1-2 sec it takes to modify the order there is an outbreak or the server is down.

So, try to use S/L, T/P bigger than 90 points and have your usual S/L T/P distances ready.

The problem did not occur since my last post.

It would be a disaster for me to have no SL and have my usual 4-5 lot position on.

I also noticed market orders have absolutely no option to add SL or TP. It's greyed out. I really miss Oanda's fxTrade. MT4 is clearly not a good software for trading manually. Very good for EA robots, but not manual orders or one has to write some scripts himself. I tried many Order Managers, they all have bugs.

I want to open a sell position when price is higher than current price.

Opening without SL and TP sucks because I still need to sit near computer and wait when it is opened to be able to set limits.

Oh, btw I think software should set automatically sell limit if I set price above current price. What is the point of sell stop option in case when you set price above current price when it is not possible combination?

But now I will be able to hunt better hopefully by not sitting at the computer and constantly checkking

m8 you need to do "baby pips " education ,,, work out what the various settings are , you can blame the system that evreyone else understands ALSO check the time the order expires ...
