Anyone here can give me some advice aside from buying new hardware on how to improve the performance of the Oanda platform.

It only takes a few full screen oanda windows to bring the platform to its knees.

Have you tried the standalone app? You can get it from fxlab.

If you mean the FXdesktop, then ya I'm using it now. I've considered trying to run a linux box just for oanda.

It is unfortunate, oanda's platform is elegantly simple, but its flaws really hurts its effectiveness.

One of the reasons I like oanda is that I can trade from my Mac. If you have a windoz machines it will not be secure no matter how much you load it up with anti virus/spyware, etc.

See: http://www.apple.com/getamac/viruses.html

See the new ads on tv? Luv the secret service guy.

http://www.apple.com/getamac/ads/
check out the security ad

Anyway, as far as hardware, Ram is the key, followed by the processor speed, followed by net speed. It is not the platform that hangs but the horsepower in your computer. A fast connection does not hurt either. We started with DSL about 5 MBs and now have 10 MBs. One fellow I know has absolutely no problems with his Mac Pro with 16 GB of RAM and 2 - 30" screens. Not there yet but soon.

But if you are unfortunate enough to need a windoz box you can actually run a program called Parallels on your Mac so you have two computers in one.

Hope this helps.

Afterthought... by the way if you think of it, give a thumbs up to oanda for the Ichimoku cloud and ask them to complete the good work with Pivot Points.

you're giving macs a bad name. As much as I love macs you can't shove them down peoples throats.

I noticed that there are a a couple trolls who like to blast people for answering honest questions. I attempted to answer yours about hardware for trading. It is up to you. I can just tell you that more colleges are banning windoz boxes as they are very problematic and here on this campus before strict measures were put in place the windoz boxes shut down the entire campus at least three times.

I was giving my honest opinion and apparently there are some who can not face that.

Anyway as for trading which is what this is supposed to be about anyway... regardless of the machine you get my previous opinion is that Ram is the most important feature you are looking for. If your machine is under-ram'd your Oanda java won't function very long very well. Processor speed is important but secondary to Ram. What I forgot to mention is you may wish to consider multiple screens though from your post you may already have these, this helps if you would like to watch multiple time frames on the same pair or if you would like to watch multiple pairs. My mentor has avised me to become an expert on just one pair. Get to know it very well and how it responds to fundamental news. Once you are an expert on that one then consider adding a secondary...It is up to you and again I apologise for the very rude people who did not address your concerns but rather took pleasure in flaming me.

Hope this helps and if you have other questions perhaps we can share information.

Demo trading Oanda, and was wondering if I can close units for partial profit? If not, which brokers do.

Hey Cheeze,

I am a fellow Oanda user, and you can close out any units you want. For instance if you are Long 1000 units of X pair, all you have to do is click the "Sell" box, and enter in the amount of units you want to cash in equal to less than 1000. Say you want to enter short RIGHT at this moment for 1000 units. THEN you click "Sell" and put in 2000 units(1000 to cash in your long, and 1000 more for Short).

Regards,

Kevin

If you're on OANDA, take a good look before you place a trade.

I just got hit with a 20 pip spread on the GBP/JPY because I didn't look. I assumed it was the same as always.....

One more lesson learned the hard way. But, cheaply, fortunately.

I never place trades during those hours. They must have forgot to reset it, because this happened Sunday evening.
