DislikedUS Equities are cheap and I bet people started selling out when some US banks hiccuped again on writedowns and the market got spooked.
I reckon the USD has a lot more strength in it the market is yet to realise. The whole downturn has well and truly been overplayed.

To correlate this monthly chart with politics, I think it's a good thing that people in the US are starting to put their votes for John McCain because the US needs an iron fist right now, a very strong and experienced man. Pulling troops from Irak would mean accepting defeat and and - although would benefit the USD in short and medium run - in the long run we can witness another September 11 and what will happen then?! So my opinion is that with McCain as President and a big hit on AlQaeda (we'll have to see if the US will trade Georgia for the Russian help) the USD will benefit fundamentally.
