No matter how far we advance with technology, we can never outsmart Mother Nature. Mother Nature is more powerful than all the nuclear weapons in the World. One tsunami, and hundreds of thousands are dead. One Earth quake and hundreds and thousands are dead.

So, no matter how far up in the sky take a sky scraper or no matter how far deep down in the ocean you build a city, it only takes one small little mishap and everything is over.

also... on the milleniumly charts I have a short position for humans and long position for Planet Earth. And a target profit before the sun explodes.

Have you guys watched the documentary "Life after Man"? The one about what happens if humanity is wiped out of the planet.

After 1,000 years there wouldn't be any trace of mankind left :

They have survived so far yes, but we all know that Venice is sinking and the Netherlands will be one of the first to be impacted due to melting polar ice.
You are wrong, its the engineers who underestimate the power of mother nature. Do you know how many fault lines there are in the world? Most people only think of the ones in S.E Asia and California. Do you know how many active super volcanoes there are? (no these types do no look like a typical volcano mountain because they don't create a mountain, they create mountain ranges) Here is an example of a super volcano, Yellowstone as most people know is volcanically active, what most people don't know is Yellowstone all 9,000 square kilometers of her is the MOUTH of the volcano. The last time she blew she left a layer of ash covering every state west of the Mississippi river, Canada and Mexico. There is another one in Indonesia that only had a small burp in 1883 which caused the water to splash around in the English channel sinking several ships. There are 30 of these super volcanoes or calderas as they are called and if only one of them blows, the effects will be felt world wide. And not just a little rumble, the effects would be so devastating thats it's almost unimaginable. No engineering can save us from that, and guess what? Yellowstone is few thousand years over due to completely destroy the entire western half of North America.

What do I care what happens to the the UAE, the middle east? The common man on the street is the one that suffers. So, no matter how much governments try put to on a display of extravagance by building new cities / tall sky scrapers, they can not hide their true nature.

There is a difference between the skyscrapers of the UAE and the Mosques. Mosques are houses of worship, whereas the skyscrpaers of symbols of extravagance.

So one would assume the the All Mighty looked after His houses of worship.

I repeat again, it's not my country and I didnt care about it but the truth

what I respect UAE for is, it's one of the oil production countries who's uses the oil prices to build itself

so let them build what they want, it's their land and their money
let's try something new

And what about those Volcanoes that will kill a large percentage of humanity thus making sky scrapers and status symbols irrelevant. In one large swoop we will lose about 4,000 years worth of technology and those who remain will be forced into the hunt and gather type of society. Crops will take a few thousand years before they can grow again, not that it would help cause the guy with the key to the doomsday seed vault would probably be dead and the survivors would have no clue where he left the key. But thank god the Twinkie factory will survive. And who started this whole doomsday discussion? ooops, sorry it was me

I don't need to go to Dubai to see the "wretched of the earth". Here in NY all I have to do is go to Queens and talk to the Camposinos who have travelled to NY to work and are now being exploited at Carwashes, kitchens, factories, etc.

Every "civilized" nation needs cheap labor to flourish. We, the citizens, usually don't want to know that part. Or we play ignorant. Just ask Wal Mart customers.
