HONG KONG (Thomson Financial) - The US dollar was higher against the yen in afternoon trade in Asia on Monday on speculation the Bank of Japan is leaning towards cutting interest rates to boost the economy.


"A Japanese government official said last week that they want to lower interest rates to help the economy. What he was trying to say is that they want a weaker yen to help their exports and the economy because there is not much to cut in their interest rates," said Mark Wan, chief analyst at Hang Seng Investment Services Ltd.


BoJ policy board member Kiyohiko Nishimura last week told businessmen that the central bank would be "flexible" in its monetary policy to lift the local economy, suggesting that policy makers are open to lower interest rates.


At 1.00 pm (0500 GMT), the dollar was trading at 106.82 yen, up from 106.68 in Sydney this morning. The dollar reached as high as 106.91 yen at noon.


The euro was quoted at 1.4813 dollars from 1.4798 dollars.


Japan's 0.5 percent benchmark rate is the lowest among developed countries, which has encouraged investors to borrow in yen and invest the proceeds in higher yielding securities elsewhere, weakening the local currency.


The BoJ has kept its rate unchanged since February last year, when it was raised by 25 basis points to 0.5 percent.


The yen may fall to as low as 109 against the dollar by the end of this month, said Wan of Hang Seng Investment Services.


"There is still appetite for Japanese investors to look for higher yields abroad," said David Mann, currency strategist at Standard Chartered Bank.


The euro is expected to steady against the dollar even with growing expectations that the Federal Reserve will lower its key rates further when policy makers meet in March.


Since it began easing its monetary policy in September, the Fed has cut its rates by a cumulative 2.25 percentage points, including a 1.25-point reduction last month alone.


A slump in the housing and financial sectors, rising jobless rate, falling consumer confidence, weak manufacturing output in the US have prompted investors to take a cautious stand against the dollar. Though recently this has been balanced by speculation of lower interest rates in the euro zone area.


"While on the balance the economic data in the US is not good for the dollar, the market is also pricing rate cuts by the European Central Bank, which is slowly turning into positive for the US currency," said Mann.


The ECB may cut its key rates by the end of this quarter, which would push the euro to as low as 1.44 against the dollar, Mann said.

I quit giving a damn about that kind of thing. After Friday's FREAKSHOW, I think people in Vegas are starting to consider bringing forex to the casinos. Ok, I know some people will jump out of the chair after reading this, but c´mon, this market is much closer to gambling than anything else.

All in all, I think only a looooooooooooooonnnnnnnng-term view matters. And that is what poped on Bloomberg today: Dollar might be finding a bottom around here while market will start to anticipate the growth recovery in the US, since Bernanke will go as far as 0% interest rate if that's what it takes.

Then comes a new round of rate hikes until what? December 2012 or something, when Mayan calendar ends, so will the world.

Anything other than that is cable update's mental masturbation.

i went long eur/gbp,..and did close the station, i cant watch, with tight sl..., yeap friday was friday...casino is casino,..and rio is rio...brother,...i wish i would see them with my own eyes.......i hope they make a double cut the gbp,..that will send it down to 1.88 the cable i mean...and will screw evrybody...and euro let them raise them...and again screw evrybody...

I think you can predict the outcome of giving a chimp a loaded .45 more easily than the outcome of rate statements around here.

This should be an interesting week.

Yeah, it was a bummer on Friday for cable. Luckily haven't had any losses. It was a bummer for cable, went in at the 8 ema, got out at 10 pips. Just too crazy. Markets had already priced weak ISM numbers but when better than expected came put, the sell off started. I guess, going to have to follow the markets a little more closely to see what the big boys are doing along with the charts.

It's not only us who are scratching our heads.
