B is in Iraq, in the provinces, and yes, it will require an adjustment (aka living conditions, loss of many freedoms I enjoy due to safety concern (no jumping in a car for a quick 'clear my head' drive - from what I hear, they don't like it very much when you take one of the tanks for a joy ride), The Man couldn't come visit or be with me (but I could see him every 60 days), etc etc etc - I don't need to tell you what living in Iraq would entail.
But, the fact that it is in Iraq is actually what appeals to me. This is what I do, what my passion is. It's not teaching btw - it's 'reconstruction efforts'. Teaching is something I got into after Kosovo, while waiting for the next 'post-conflict area', someplace to go help after the conflict. The current job I have is not actually teaching either, but working on educ. reform here (the project sucks btw, and they are on crack if they think it'll succeed without major changes, which makes me want to go back into project creation and management even more - something that could be so useful, so good for generations to come is doomed from the very inception due to lack of vision, poor management, etc!)
As Ash said, it's really not about the money (although money's a nice bonus, and so are all those 'mandatory flyout' days on top of regular vacation time). I went into Kosovo with humanitarian mission right after Nato bombing, for basically no money, when not even 'peace keepers' would go into parts of it. My mother thinks it's some sort of a 'survivor guilt' psycho-issue (I grew up in a war), and it might as well be, but all I know is I'm the most satisfied when doing that type of work - feels like I'm really doing something, helping at least somebody, not just counting hours till next paycheck.
But of course, there is the issue that yes, should something happen, there are people who would miss me very much. And, a big difference between Iraq and Kosovo would be that at least I spoke the language in Kosovo and understood when somebody shouted 'oh shit! RUN!!!'
And then there's the issue of telling my mom, who will, of course, spend the next countless days driving me insane with guilt trips only Yugo mothers know how to give!
Anyhow... the recruiting season just started, so I don't have to decide anything yet. Thank you all for your input - it's so much better to get it from unbiased sources
I'll let you know in 2 months or so what I've decided (that is, if I don't freeze to death over the next couple of days here in the desert - 'never under 80 degrees' my a$$
