QuoteDisliked20:59 CFTC Commitment Data Released 21 Dec for 18 Dec
CAD/USD Net Long 23,287 from Net Long 18,664 the Week of Dec 11
CAD longs continued to rise, helping fuel the move in USD/CAD back below parity.
0.9800 is seen support with a sharp fall in recent CAD-positive M&A flows
limiting the scope for CAD gains in coming sessions.
CHF/USD Net Short -6,984 from Net Long 1,933 the Week of Dec 11
Specs are net short now with VIX falling to seven-week lows, fuelling risk
appetite and short selling of CHF on carry trades. Risk for a move back to
1.1700-1.1900.
GBP/USD Net Long 11,537 from Net Long 56,998 the Week of Dec 11
As expected, GBP/USD fell under 1.9900 as signs of a slowdown in the UK
increased and the BOE made a unanimous decision to cut rates. Longs are sharply
reduced and risk for a move lower to 1.9700 remains.
JPY/USD Net Long 13,357 from Net Long 30,903 the Week of Dec 11
As expected, the spec longs have been sharply pared, coinciding with the move
above 114.00 today. Carry trades are in vogue with the VIX at seven-week lows,
with risk still for a move to 115.00 on USD/JPY.
EUR/USD Net Long 31,149 from Net Long 63,374 the Week of Dec 11
As expected, with the break under 1.4500, EUR has come under pressure, with
specs paring longs to the lowest since Oct 2006. Slight risk for a further
extension to 1.4200 but the sharp reduction in longs may limit the downside.
AUD/USD Net Long 11,037 from Net Long 32,965 the Week of Dec 11
AUD/USD longs are the lowest since August, after the fall to 0.8550 today. The
low level of longs increases scope for bounce back to 0.8800.
NZD/USD Net Long 9,626 from Net Long 11,341 the week of Dec 11
NZD/USD declined towards 0.7500 as expected after the rise in longs last week,
with specs paring positions. But today"s NZD bounce, and lack of longs could see
specs again target gains to 0.7751.
MXN/USD - Net 66,889 from Net Long 38,903 the week of Dec 11
USD/MXN remained range-bound this week but the longs are the highest since
November 6th, increasing a risk for topside breakout, targeting 10.95.
