Wall Street was set for a mixed open Friday before retail inflation data that will give further clues on what the Federal Reserve might do after this week's disappointing quarter-point cut, and with jitters on the credit crunch continuing.

Stock index futures showed the Dow and the S&P opening lower, while the Nasdaq indicated slightly higher.

"Volatility in the markets is here to stay with us, I'm afraid, for a little while. I don't see any reason why it shouldn't continue for the rest of the year and into January," Clive Cooke, CEO at City Index, told "Worldwide Exchange."

"The markets want to know that this subprime crisis is unwinding," Cooke added.

Private body blow bailout

Citigroup said it will provide emergency support to seven structured investment vehicles if they can't find buyers for their short-term notes.

The move is being seen as a body blow for a rescue fund that several large banks have been working to develop at the urging of the Treasury Department.

"It says the super SIV is dead in the water. That shows it was a bad idea in the first place and as with (British bank) HSBC they have realized they have to sort their own problems and not seek help from someone else," said Alan Webborn at SG Securities in London.

Dow dropped from -28 to -58 to -68, now -78.

Sounds like a -200 Friday to me

Wall Street was set for a lower open as investors continue to worry over distressing signs in the credit industry, while government data reinforced the belief that consumer prices are rising at a rapid price (I think it means pace)

The government said in a before-the-bell report that consumer prices jumped a bigger-than-expected 0.8 percent in November, the sharpest climb in more than two years and driven by surging energy costs.
