Hey everyone!

I don’t have issues with how to trade prop firms — my problem is I can’t even decide which ones to go with. I asked for advice in the most active prop trading thread I could find, but got zero replies.

Anyone here have a solid approach for picking a prop firm? What do you look at — payout structure, drawdown rules, evaluation cost? Would really appreciate some real-world tips!

payout is important but check on the rules ,visit [prop firm match] you will get a good insight on different prop firms ,find the one that fits your style .

I’m with people who advise to trade with 1:2 risk to reward or even more, if there is a possibility. I’m not just saying this, I passed a prop firm challenge in my third try as a beginner (knew the basiscs of trading, but learned to trade intraday futures NQ & ES during the process) and was able to get a payout in the end with my funded 50K account. What kept me alive during the challenge phase was my risk to reward ratio. My average was somewhere around 1.7 rr, all depends on the chart. Sometimes I could take trades of 1:3 RR, the other time 1.5:1, but the minimum was always 1:1. If the set up gives me lower than that, I'm skipping. And that's exactly why I’m struggling to wrap my head around how you can say that some traders can pass challenges with a risk to reward ratio of less than 1:1. How does that even work out? You would need an incredibly high win rate, like over 70% for that to make any sense. Plus, it just doesn’t add up to risk more than you could potentially gain, even if the setup looks solid. It’s not worth it, since you would have to win two trades just to cover one loss (if your RR is 0.5:1 for example). It should really be the other way around… Simple risk management.

get what you’re saying, but mathematically it’s not that simple.
Yes, it’s possible to pass with an RR below 1:1 — but only if the win rate is consistently very high. For example, with a 0.5:1 RR, you’d need well over 65–70% accuracy just to maintain positive expectancy. That’s extremely difficult to sustain, especially during a prop challenge where emotions and drawdown limits are tight.
Personally, what helped me pass was keeping my minimum at 1:1 and aiming higher when the chart allowed it. That way, I didn’t need to rely on a near-perfect win rate. A solid 50–60% accuracy was enough because the math worked in my favor.
Risk management is what keeps you alive long enough to get the payout.

If I were you I would at least get some trading experience. There is no difference of trading live account and with prop firms even on demo. Get consistent and use proper risk. Use fundamentals and macro analysis. Trade against retail traders aswell - since most of them are wrong. Check screenshot
