I couldn't watch the Project Omega sneak peek webinar due to being stuck at work.

Can someone who watched it give us some highlights? Apparently wasn't recorded so 2nd hand anecdotes from FF users are my only hope

It doesn't begin until 8pm EDT (July 24), that's not for another 18 hours... I could put on my psychic helmet and report some of the highlights before they happen, but I can't guarantee my accuracy !

How do i skype in to the webinar phone number (605) 772-3434 ? Skype doesnt offer a 605 prefix? Wouldnt it be much easier (and free) to just make a skype conference call? Is this some toll number in USA?
Hope to see Omega with many good features.

I hope it have support over proxy, just like any MT4 platform.

I was one of the 300+ people who attended the webinar, I'll give a quickie rundown.

There was a fairly detailed discussion (approx one hour) of the history of electronic trading and the advantages of using a straight-through processing ECN for trading (having your orders exposed to the market so your broker can't jack you around, etc.). It was a good overview for those unfamiliar with the difference between an ECN broker and a dealing-desk broker. Nothing new or revolutionary if you're familiar with the difference, but some insight was provided into the mindset of the EFX guys as to where electronic forex trading is heading. I liked what I heard.


Now regarding Omega:

  1. No screenshots were provided, so dunno what it looks like.
  2. No monthly cost, it will be made available to EFX customers only.
  3. It will have integrated charting, and trading from the chart will be possible.
  4. It makes use of some sort of space-folding technology to chart pricing four and a half hours into the future. It takes alot of energy to do this, so you'll only be able to see the future price for a single pair at any one time.
  5. A great deal of emphasis is being placed on wireless/cellphone/blackberry/etc. trading.
  6. There will be some sort of scripting/automation functionality, they talked about server-side automated trading.
  7. No idea if an API will be exposed (my question went unanswered).
  8. It will make use of their current order placement/management system so you're not going to see a change in spreads, slippage, etc.
  9. It's not written in Java.
  10. It's largely (if not completely) custom development and it might not do all the cool stuff right out of the gate. Most likely implemented over multiple releases.

Justin, if you want me to pull any/all of these details just let me know. I figure it's safe to do so since you spilled the beans to more than 300 people.

I agree, the presentation was interesting (altho i yawned quite extensivly at the usual efx marketmaker-bashing in the middle of the show). You forgot one point tho: global same execution-speed for everyone, regardless of location. I am curious what they mean by that. I mean, they cant magically make internet-latency disappear. If everyone has the same speed of execution with omega, that also means navigator will either be slower or faster, which makes one of the two platforms obsolete. Or maybe it means, Justin will pay me a private Radians-line into my house?

He also mentioned, that they are working on more account base-currencies and reasonable ways of transfering cash for non US-residents, no ETA tho. One of the reasons im not trading with them atm. Swaps will change too (really soon now, really). I think its slowly getting there.

My API question didnt get answered too.

Yeah... that one had me stumped. I'm not Stephen Hawking smart but I'm pretty sure thats impossible. I'm guessing they were talking about more direct routing as opposed to magically teleporting data across the internet.

I was testing demo version of EFX Navigator, and this happened to me twice.
I couldn't close my open orders with messages such as destination unknown or something. (that's another thing, all trading messages are wiped out after a day and I don't know how to find them) Few hours later I was able to close my order.
In light of this I am very doubtful about using this system live.
As cumbersome as it is by itself, if it loses track of open positions at critical moments it hard to trust it with real money.

It's a phone number like any other. Nothing special about it. It's located in South Dakota, USA.

I don't use Skype so I don't understand why you can't dial into a normal phone number with it. Why wouldn't it "offer" a certain prefix? Isn't Skype supposed to be VOIP?

That's a real comfort. I suggest that they test their code somewhere else.
It's real fun when you can't execute an order with no explanation or warning, by the way quotes seemed to work fine, they were moving, so I assumed that system was connected.

If would be great if there was something like GameRail [dot] com but not only for gamers. They claim to improve latency by as much as 80%. It's probably 90% marketing, but still...

Geez, you've been asking about this quite a bit, and you didn't even attend the webinar?
Overall I enjoyed the webinar. Lots of good information. However, it really wasn't focused on omega at all, very few specifics were given, and I felt a bit disappointed at the end that if this stuff is supposed to roll out so soon, why couldn't we get ONE screenshot? It really should have just been called "The History of Trading and Why ECNs Are the Way of the Future." Again, very informative, and I'm glad I was there.

Also, as far as mobile trading goes, it was mentioned that the ideal goal would be that anyone could use omega "from a mobile phone" to trade. So is this some mobile-web-based (WAP, or CWAP, as I call it) order system, without charts? If so, it will be nothing special. Hopefully this is not the case, as this would not be a mobile trading platform but rather just a mobile interface. I feel certain that such a hyped (granted, hyped by us mostly) platform will be much more than that. Looking forward to it.
