From the 1973 debut album by Doug Sahm after he folded his Sir Douglas Quintet Band (the 'She's About A Mover' era for those that were there hahaa )

A Tex-Mex foot tapper with the album featuring guest appearances by Dr John, Flaco Jiminez (Ry Cooder's accordionist on the squeeze box), with David Bromberg, Kenny Kosek on 2nd fiddle with Doug, and then Bob Dylan also featured on a few other album tracks.

Okay, a long one for our Sth African friends this morning
(cheers Mos).

In 1970 a singer-songwriter hit the charts with an album Cold Fact.

When I say hit the charts the album was surprisingly a bust in his home country America, no interest,
but it did exceptionally well over here in Aus AND also in South Africa.

This guy was surely going somewhere I thought, but then a few years later he just disappeared, literally.

Years later, in the 90’s a couple of musical "detectives" from Sth Africa were curious as to what happened to Rodriguez so they embarked on one of the most interesting (imho) works of discovery I could have imagined.

It later became a documentary called “Searching for Sugar Man” (after another song title from the album).


This is NOT a doco for the casual watcher, sorry, it is quite long and slow at 1½hrs and just watching the first 5 mins of it will not unlock the ‘magic’ which then comes later. Spoiler, sorry again hahaa, they “found” Rodriguez. But WHAT exactly had he been doing in between, bizarre.

And towards the end of the doco what the successful detectives then did by asking him to come over to Sth Africa to perform, and what also transpired with a daughter who went with him, was again ‘magical’ (in my eyes lol).

Anyway for any who might put aside the whole 1½hrs (maybe on a weekend after trading is over lol) they might find some of this story as magical as I did.
NO guarantees though, we each have a prism through which we look at & examine life differently. All the best, anyways on a fine Monday morning over here in Aus.

A friend from Detroit gave my wife and I a copy of that movie. "Well, there's two hours of my life I won't get back." says I so under protest I watched it and it has since become part of the winter movie rotation. Thanks for the reminder.

The Nagra I see was a portable high end true hi fidelity poece of equipment (not todays hi-fi word use lol)
