Fiona,

Simply put "news.csv" instead of "C:\Program Files\..........."

The only one thing you have to be sure is that the .exe file must be in the same folder.

Mike is correct, in that you need to change the <broker folder name> in
c:\program files\<broker folder name>\experts\files\news.csv
to reflect where your MT4 has been installed.

Mine works OK regardless of whether I type uppercase or lowercase ‘c’ for the drive.

The FFcal.EXE application will happily look for the news.csv file in any folder that you specify. However, the Plot_News indicator, when attached to your MT4 chart, always looks for it in the …\experts\files\ folder. (So, for what FerruFX says to work correctly, you would need to have both FFcal.EXE and news.csv installed in the …\experts\files\ folder).

Double check your path name. Make sure you have a single space between ‘program’ and ‘files’ in ‘program files’, and that you have exactly the right number of spaces, underscores, punctuation marks, etc in <broker folder name>. If you get all of this correct, all should work smoothly, forever.

I have renamed the file path to Interbank FX Trader 4a and the excel news sheet is in experts/files, both the MQL files are in indicators but still nothing.........

Perhaps it is something to do with News.csv????

News.csv was not in the last zip file. So what I need to do is go back to lattest zip and download News.csv and install in experts/files do I then create a specific folder within files named News.csv? what at the end of the day is in this folder??? news.csv and???? just the news excel page????

Fiona,

The easiest way for me to find the "full path" and make sure it was typed in correctly was to open windows explorer. You can do that by either right clicking on the "start" button or hitting the "windows key" and "e" at the same time. Then navigate to your copy of metatrader, then copy and paste the full path from the address window into the "Pathname of output" area of the Build news application. See attached.

If you can't get it to work once you paste it in there then make sure the "c" is lowercase. Hanover I don't know what's the matter with my Dell (or is that redundant) but that is what it took to get it to work for me.

Sorry, my last post was perhaps confusing.

When I said that “The FFcal.EXE application will happily look for the news.csv file in any folder…” I perhaps should have said “The FFcal.EXE application will happily look for, or create, the news.csv file in any folder…”, i.e. the folder in the path that you specify. The news.csv file doesn’t need to be there to begin with, which is why it’s not supplied in the original ZIP file.

However, the Plot_News indicator later requires that news.csv is in the …\experts\files folder. MT4 looks for external data files in this folder. BY getting the pathname correct, FFcal.EXE will create it there.

In the same way, MT4 looks for indicators in the …\experts\indicators folder, which is why the Plot_News.MQ4/EX4 and Sessions.MQ4/EX4 files need to be there.

Mike’s idea of pasting the full pathname from Windows Explorer is a good one.

Is the error message that you’re getting something like “Create(<pathname>\news.csv) – Path Not Found”? If so, the only possible explanation that I’m aware of is that the entered pathname doesn’t already exist.

Are you using backslashes (\) or forward slashes (/) in the pathname? Backslashes are the correct option. Also, you need a colon [:] rather than a semi-colon [;] after the drive name (‘c’).

I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with Team Speak 2. I did a Google and found a product that allows teleconferencing here: http://www.goteamspeak.com/

Also did a Google on "NewStrike" but couldn't find anything that's meaningfully related.

I need more information, preferably URLs to the products you're describing.

Assuming I understand what you're asking, you would need to explain your auto-trading method and rules (when to buy, sell, lot sizes etc). In which case you need someone to write an EA. It seems like there would need to be some kind of voice recognition, i.e. software needed to somehow interpret the audio from Team Speak into trading signals. That definitely falls outside the scope of MQL4.

The Plot_News indicator is about plotting news events on MT4 charts. Hence you also need to explain how news relates to your system. If news plotting is irrelevant, then I'm afraid you're posting in the wrong thread. (I apologize if I am misjudging you, but your post seems so off-topic, I guess there is the possibility that you're being facetious???)

The bottom line is I need a whole lot more information, but I suspect the simple answer is that what you're asking is not possible.

Thanks for this Hanover - it saves ALOT of time and really helps bring the charts to life!

One question - I just started using MT4 and installed Plot News last week. Now I can see all news as expected - except for this weeks and future events.

I'm using ffcal.exe to build news.csv and the dates in the output field inclusive of this week (up to Dec 07).

What am I missing?

www.teamspeak.org
They give voice info on all markets events just when events happen. Non commercial use - free. System needs voice recognition. I wonder is anybody using something like that or it is a distant future.

GoldenGuru – thanks for the feedback. All future enhancements will remain free of charge. The only problem that may occur is if the webmasters here change the HTML code/format of the FF calendar, making it incompatible with FFcal.EXE. In that case, FFcal.EXE’s life-span is limited to my own availability in continuing to provide fixes and support.

Meromar – thanks for the info. Unfortunately, voice recognition lies outside the scope of MQL4.

Ragster – FFcalc.EXE’s own ‘Events History’ comes pre-loaded with news events up to the beginning of May. You need to tell FFcal.EXE to download data, a week at a time, for each week after that. (This assumes that the data is available on the FF calendar for that particular week). To do this, press F5 and change the “FF calendar start date” near the top of the screen to Sunday 6 May (5/6/2007), then press Enter to process. Then press F5 again, and press the ‘+7’ button to advance the date to 13 May, and press Enter to process once again. Then repeat for 20 May. And so on. You need to do this process once for every week that you require data from the FF calendar, and also any time you want to update FFcal’s Events History with new data from FF calendar (e.g. when “Actual” values get updated during a news announcement). To see what’s in the Events History, press F9. See posts #48, 51 and (especially) 52 in this thread for more details. If you need more help, please continue to post.

Is there any way to create csv file directly from the FF site that updates the accual numbers as soon as they are announced "or posted on the site " ?

I can generate a file from these

Apart from http://www.forexfactory.com/ff_calendar_thisweek.xml, I don’t know of an easy way to obtain either XML or CSV data from FF. My FFcal.EXE (which is written in Clarion, not MQL4) calls WGET.EXE to grab the FF calendar’s HTML for the relevant week, parses the HTML to get the necessary news event-related text, and then outputs this data to a Clarion-based database. However, the output could just as easily be sent to a CSV file, or anything else.

The WGET command needed to grab any given week's calendar from FF is as follows:

wget http://www.forexfactory.com/calendar...eek=1167523200
i.e. should read "....forexfactory.com/calendar.php?c=2&week=1167523200"

where 1167523200 represents the date Sunday Dec 31, 2006.
To start the calendar at a different day, add or subtract 86400 (the number of seconds in a day) for each day later or earlier, respectively, than Dec 31, 2006. e.g. to get the calendar for the week starting Sunday Jan 7, 2007, use
1167523200 + (7 x 86400) = 1168128000

You can obtain WGET from the ZIP in post #63 of this thread, if you need it.

If you’re interested in the logic needed to parse the HTML, let me know. I can PM you the Clarion source code, which is fairly readable if you’re familiar with programming. However, I’m afraid it’s not overly well commented.

I’d rather use PM than clutter up this thread, unless the posts might be useful to others also.

To have the numbers populated as soon as they are released, the only way I can think of doing this is to have a job running continuously in the background, that runs WGET, and parses its output, every few seconds/minutes after each news event.

Alternatively, you might like to check out the ‘opposition’: http://calendar.forex-tsd.com/
Click the little blue symbol in the ‘API’ column to get a CSV file for the current/upcoming week, including the ‘Actual’ values. Of course it’s TSD’s calendar, not FF’s, and I don’t know how often it gets updated. You could search their forum for MQ4’s that process this file. As an alternative to WGET, they have MQ4s there that call ‘webget’ to extract data from their calendar HTML. In developing your own news grabber, you might be able to use fragments of code from the MQ4 in the attached ZIP, as a starting point.

It shows,

StartPoint = closing price of the bar before the announcement
HighPoint = Highest price within 1 hour of the Announcement
HighestTime = Time at which this price occounred
LowPoint = Lowest price within 1 hour of announcement
LowestTime = Time at which this price occounred

I imported it into an excel spreadsheet it is a cool way to figure out how much of an impact the event had on price.
Can tell how much time passed from start to High/Low. Did it whipsaw. ect...

Need some help....

when you export my new news file into excel you get the text1 and text 2 in a cell...

How do i seperate the cell into multiple cells with the following info..

currently looks like this ... in one cell

I now have news_plot loaded and I love it. One question I don't seem to have the debug file within the experts/files folder. Could this prove problematic if so where do i find it? I susspect at some point I deleted the entire contents within file, to start a fresh, in one of my many attempts.

Fiona C – debug file??? Definitely not problematic; Plot_News doesn’t use one of those. Anyway, glad you like the indicator. I also find it invaluable (smart money tracks the economic indicators, dumb money the lagging technicals): I developed it for purely selfish reasons.

Plenty of new enhancements in the pipeline...... version 2.0 due for release soon, watch this space......
