This is for all my friends on Linux who had trouble getting mt4 to install qand found it tough

Yesterday I did a fresh install of linux mint a variant of ubuntu and decided to install mt4 through the setup route so that i could use the services of mql5 community inside mt4

steps i followed [ and mind you they were just too easy

step 1 : get drunk [ i mean install wine ]

If your Ubuntu version does not provide a repository and you get an error during Wine installation, run the following commands one by one:

wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/Release.key
sudo apt-key add Release.key
sudo apt-add-repository https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/
Next, update the package information by executing the following command:

sudo apt-get update
After the command execution, install Wine using the following command:
Inserted Code
sudo apt-get install --install-recommends winehq-stable

step 2 :

rune the command
Inserted Code
winecfg

after mono installer and gecko have installed it will show the winecfg GUI

here default windows version is win 7
go to drives tab and select AUTODETECT to setup the drives

step 3 :

now this step is important

remember mt4 is 32 bit and my linux mint is 64 bit

wine installation by default provides two directories

 

  1. Program Files - 64 bit
  2. Program Files (x86) - 32 bit

you have to install mt4 in the 32 bit directory

thats it , so simple and easy

Just a quick note : it's just in reverse, x86 comes from 32 bit architectures.
Thank you very much PatienceFx for posting this information. I couldn't get Wine to install on Ubuntu but this did the trick! I downloaded mt4setup.exe and ran the installation, but when everything was done it had installed mt5 instead. Just wanted to leave this comment for anyone who really wants mt4.

Based on linux documentation, wine can lead to Security hole too ... so, is there any other free forex trading platform that run on Linux Without Wine (except JForex), so we can build our own Custom Indicator on it easily ?

Any idea on MT4-webtrader ? Example here : https://justforex.com/trading-platforms/mt4-webtrader
Does it means we do Not need Wine for this ? It seems that we can not use EA on it (this is not a big problem), but how about Custom indicator that we have in MT4 (windows version), can we still use it ?

Any clue is welcome.

How do you install multiple MT4 in wine?
I manage to install first one and it puts a desktop shortcut.
Subsequent ones I manage to install and run but there is not desktop shortcut. Once I close the MT4, I am not sure how to execute it again?

If you're installing multiple instances of MT4, I'd suggest you make a folder containing all the MT4 installations similar to the following, change the folder names/path to whatever you want:

1. Install wine as above
2. Make a folder
mkdir -p /WineApps/{MTinstance1,MTinstance2,MTinstance3}

3. Install broker's MT4 (32-bit)
WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=/WineApps/MTinstance1/ wine <path2mt4exefile>
WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=/WineApps/MTinstance2/ wine <path2mt4exefile>

//install on 64-bit (WINEARCH is optional)
WINEARCH=win64 WINEPREFIX=/WineApps/MTinstance3/ wine <path2mt4exefile>

If you simply double-click the mt4 exe file to install, it's very likely it install in the .wine folder in your home directory. Open a folder and type the following on the folder path (no "" and change your userid) "/home/<userid>/.wine/". Or, you can press Ctrl+H to hide and unhide hidden files and folders with names starting with a period (such as the .wine folder).
(I hope this thread is still alive!). I have been running MT4 on Ubuntu for a few years. One thing that's always bugged me is that I cannot view the news articles. I don't have this problem on OS X (TBH, under Crossover). Has anyone got that working?

Linux Mint is a community-driven Linux distribution based on Ubuntu (which is in turn based on Debian), bundled with a variety of free and open-source applications.

Has someone ever tried on a Raspberry Pi platform or a Terasic SoC platform? Can't find a way to deal with the latter (and have not tried yet with the former).

Tip: Fast access to the following folders for single or multiple MT4 / 5 Terminal installations: Indicators, Experts, Script, Templates, Includes, Libraries, Presets ...etc.

Note: this tip is extracted from a machine with a wine installation.

  1. Every MT4 / 5 has a unique 32 character alphanumeric folder (the folder's name is made up of a combination of 32 letters and numbers).
  2. The above files are contained in the 32 character alphanumeric folder.

  1. Action a Favourite Applet on the panel.
  2. Right-click the panel.
  3. Click Applets
  4. Click Favourites.
  5. The five pointed start favourites applet should now be on the panel.

  6. All 32 character alphanumerical folders associated with each installed MT4 / 5 are all contained in the MetaQuotes Terminal folder.
  7. Locate the Terminal folder. (replace phylo accordingly)

  8. The Terminal folder will not have the yellow star marker yet.
  9. Right-click the Terminal folder and click - Add to favourites. The terminal folder will aquire the yellow star marker.
  10. Click the favourites applet on the panel to open the applet menu and click Terminal.
  11. The file system will open and display the folders in the Terminal folder which also contains each 32 character alphanumeric folder for each respective installed MT4 / 5 Terminal.

  13. The Indicators, Experts, Scripts etc., folders are in the MT4 / 5 folder.
  14. To determine which MT4 / 5 installation is being accessed click the - origin.txt - file which contains the name of the associated MT4 / 5 installation.

Can anyone list out the task list to install, up and running MT4/MT5 on Linux OS system?

As I had tried few times few months back but i couldn't succeed.

Perhaps the best for you is to ensure wine is installed.

To test if wine is installed do this:

How do I check Wine on Linux?
You could simply type in wine --version in a terminal window.

If wine is not installed get it installed.

If wine is installed right click the MT4 / 5 installation file and run from Wine. (actually if wine is intalled the MT4 / 5 installation *setup.exe file should run just fine if clicked).

For location of folders - see my above posts.

or aletrnatively - see my posts re bottles - its all there.
