Trump to delay decision on auto tariff imports for up to six months - report

The decision was due Friday and would have opened another front in the trade war. It was a major worry for European policymakers in particular.

Top US officials discussed the tariffs at a meeting yesterday, according to the report. The idea is to let Japan and EU trade negotiations play out first.

US stocks have wiped out gains on the headlines and USD/JPY jumped to 109.54. The euro is the main beneficiary as EUR/USD climbs 40 pips to 1.2121 and EUR/JPY rallies into positive territory.

The negative spin here is that Trump must believe the battle with China will be a prolonged one and that he doesn't want to fight on two fronts.

Oil hits the highest since May 2

Oil is going with the ebb and flow of the risk trade this week but that raises some important points.

The first one is that even as equities sank early in the week, oil held $60 -- and without even a real test. That should have been the first clue for the bulls.

Now that stocks have had a modest bounce we see crude prices break above the highs of the week and to the best levels since the first hours of the month. We're still $3 from the April high but crude is showing some positive signs and that plays back into the negative momentum in USD/CAD.

Ultimately, there are some major geopolitical risks in play with Iran, Venezuela and the trade war. At the same time, there is less of a risk that OPEC will turn on the taps. On the flipside, the Chinese-US trade war isn't going away and it will be hard for oil to climb much further if global growth is kneecapped by the trade war.

BOC's Poloz: Still expects growth to pick up later this year

Comments from Poloz and Wilkins:

  1. Closely watching mortgage guidelines that may be shifting lending to private lenders and credit unions
  2. Household borrowing is likely to pick up again

The latest numbers have been excellent and (barring trade war risks) there is a real chance that growth is better than BOC forecasts.

More:

  1. Canadian housing is benefiting from solid fundamentals
  2. Long-term rate risks 'moderate but increasing'
  3. Toronto-area housing appears to be stabilizing
  4. Risk of severe housing deceleration is falling
  5. We should see increasing evidence of growth returning to trend in H2
  6. Escalation of US-China trade war remains primary risk
  7. Risks on financial system 'enter into the discussion' on what to do with rates
