In the following example I would have placed an order if price had moved upwards before coming back down to the setup line. However, price moved downwards before returning, so I thought the setup was invalid, yet it would have worked out perfectly. My question is: Does price have to first move away in the direction of the trend or is the direction irrelevant? Your help is greatly appreciated....

I might miss something about this method, some setups I picked don't...
well done. if you're going to do a counter trend trade, ensure there is evidence there to support a buy trend in an interim down trend

no actually, you go down a time frame to reduce your DD and find setups within setups or within accumulation zones, or at the end of them.

First i said " of near" equal sizes. But I also said PREFERABLY equal And this is a counter trend setup in the image, lots of confluences there to warrant a Sell.

Before any of you should attempt those, concentrate on the EW image I drew, it'll give people an idea where to get your buy and sell setup ideas from.

Listen, Ladies & Gents, its like waiting for a bus, find the area where there are lots of people hanging around that area, is the trend going up? if so, then you could be looking at an accumulation zone where people are waiting to BUY, vise versa for Sells. So count your phrases/accumulation areas.

A lot of examples I have seen are not adhering to a routine, they are finding the setup in any place on the chart and accepting it as a valid setup.. NO NO NO Ladies & Gents.

You want the Bus to go in your direction, you dont want to be getting on a bus in the wrong direction or it will take longer to get home.

The only time you get on a bus going in the wrong direction is if the bus is entering a colder-sack getting ready to turn around or its heading back to the station to pick more people up.
