"Europe is in trouble, and bluster is their typical response to any challenge. Several pivotal issues face them. Brexit will cause them to lose significant revenue. They are going to lose a lot of investment in Iran. Huge immigrant inflows increase the welfare burden. Germany will have to pay its NATO dues, so defence spending has to increase.
A bloc of eastern countries defines itself partly by refusing to accept the immigrant inflow, meaning that the welfare burden will fall heavily on Germany. Italy is unstable because of difficulties forming a government after a recent election where a majority of votes went to the Right. Greece is holding hundreds of thousands of refugees on its islands, disaffecting them because of how badly they treat them.
On the border is Turkey, who by agreement also hold thousands of refugees, that becomes more extremist in its stance. The Europeans will bluster – at this time they desperately seek to reverse or stall Brexit, they threaten the Eastern bloc of states, they bully Greece, and they play a role in preventing the accession of a new Italian parliament.
Any way you look at it they are in a lot of trouble. As they have difficulty making any kind of swift decision they will be forced to bluster for a long time, and they have no sane expectation of winning or even breaking even in a trade war. The President’s timing on Iran was well-judged. The Europeans will have to comply with US restrictions, but they cannot be trusted for one second."
