The gist is with tongue firmly in cheek are we comfortable with criminals behind bars, the answer is usually yes, is a man a criminal for defending his home and loved ones from criminals, IMO NO and I ask in despair what is wrong with you people when self defense is not an option, but a criminality, taking this to a national level why have an army if self defense is to be criminalized...I suspect my sarcasm did not shine through....

You are not alone in having that disposition regarding having a staying interest in reading philosophy, it is often hard to read as well as comprehend various perspectives. Heidegger as being an example to that as he would even invent words in order to articulate his ideas within the construct of deconstruction is one such person who was considered extremely difficult to read. My advice is reading it in small doses in order allow time to formulate further thought on an idea being discussed. Philosophy after all is what it is intended to be, to advocate and expound further thought.

My rhetorical question would be, Is that role a reactive one or an attempt at predictiveness? I’m sure there are lay-people (I think I’m probably one myself) who believe it’s a little bit of both.

I think you are right to assume it is a little bit of both, but in the case of the social Marxists, their failures to support arguments in the advent of socialism as a means for solutions to cure societies ill’s hid behind the paradigm of “post modernism” to further their advocacy in cultivating cultural Marxism in the modern day narrative.

Does this ultimately describe the Nihilism that Nietzsche spoke of?

Not sure, because the element of social media and advancements in technology certainly plays a larger role in the cognitive dissonance and it’s current discourse that we are so familiar with in todays societies. While viewing it from critical standpoint, and I am not sure Nietzsche would have made that a consideration, although I would concede he may have had some peculiar ideas on what the future looked like at the time he lived, but like most living within a specific time period are only making assumptions based on the available technology at the time in which they consumed in. I think Orwell was the exception to this given what we know today and how he was right in many aspects in how society would evolve into a surveillance state. Even though your question is rhetorical in nature it is still an important one. My observation of Nietzsche’s term Nihilism is within his view of the rise of German nationalism in an era that was dogmatic within it’s own reinforced social stratifications, like Christianity and predicting it’s demise, and the military pageantry for Nationalism that the Germans are so well known to propagate. The other irony as well is that the Nazi’s adopted much of Nietzsche’s idealistic platforms to insist on the idea of an Arian race and twisted his true meanings around to make it their own, claiming him as their champion, which is viewed as their own nihilism. Nietzsche’s use of the term “Nihilism was life affirmative not the opposite, so in todays context, again history repeating itself to offer or distort a another representation of nihilism is not to be life affirming but more or less fragmented in tiny micro narratives that doesn’t offer much in the way of a consensus for building for positive life affirmation. Dr Jordan Peterson, talks about this aspect in a more detailed synopsis and is interesting to learn others speak about this in order to gain further understanding. As he points out, we are creatures that are very dependent on history to determine certain discourses we engage in today.


I can see that you’re a film buff. One of my all-time favourite movies is Powell and Pressburger’s, A Canterbury Tale. Filmed around Canterbury in 1944 it gives a fascinating insight into semi-rural English life during WWII, which in large part is due to the fact that aspects of it are semi-documentary. Having said that, the substantive part is standard film form and is just a wonderfully magical story that Powell and Pressburger tell in their inimitable way.
I will have to look for that film, if I can find it. It seems as you articulate an interesting one to watch for style and period. This in my view is one of the most interesting aspects of film that I consider going back in time to view or pick up clues of what was different in culture, language used, fashion worn, music, or social issues.

This is in regards to the film "Canterbury Tales" the images of soldiers going to war singing that song!

Isn’t Judaism part of Christianity but excludes the New Testament? Nevertheless, just as you point out religion being used as an excuse for impetus to go to war is something that is both compelling and problematic when viewing our own historical perspective, and also for the same reason you point out that when a culture is not sure what to fight for is when they are at their most vulnerable. “Along came Obama” Justin Trudeau and his dreamy looks, or Stalin, Hister (as Nostradamus called him) are all examples in which the blind are lead to their demise and history repeating continuously our flawed rallying points to demand change. How does that work when things still remain the same for ideological differences we fail to reconcile? Funny whenever I think of the “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” I have this image of Mohamed, Jesus, Buddha, and that other guy I can’t quite distinguish, although further thoughts on this has me placing Nietzsche there for ushering in the post modern era that brings all these together to serve as a metaphor to our own demise. I don’t believe in this of course, but it is fun to pose this as a form of comedic relief to emphasize our absurdities when it comes to what we subscribe to in terms of offering solutions, which in essence are no solutions at all. However, I don’t begrudge an individuals choice for believing in something, but certainly I would advocate in further discussions in looking at many perspectives when relating to choices such as belief in a particular religion. The problem with Atheists of today, they do much to undermine their own arguments by attacking others for those choices I speak of, and that in of itself defeats the purpose of advocating tolerance for all to be inclusive in modern day societies. It’s the methods and discourse (albeit a negative one) that I am highly critical of not the belief or the disagreement itself. This is where I am also critical of modern day Christians and I argue that language is outdated to really understand or practice correctly Jesus’s teachings, or put into proper perspective that the Bible was written by man, or that God is not Gender specific, does not have a human form or that people do not need an intermediary to have a relationship with the all powerful and mighty. They leave no room for reevaluation as does Islam which to date has never underwent a reformation of it’s core tenets either, which in a profound aspect is the root cause for it’s violent discourse today. So yes we maybe moving to something else, and I can see that we are steadily moving in that direction while in the midst of our eternal conflicts that serves to impede our own progress for understanding ourselves is mired in the preverbal mud of stagnating consequences.

"To use another film reference, it has always struck me that Stanley Kubrick was essentially intimating the above in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Humanity’s survival was rooted in the rejection (or at least re-examination) of mainstream religion. In the closing sequence of the original screenplay, Kubrick had placed nuclear missile-armed satellites orbiting Earth. Part of the “Star-Child’s” return was to invoke a spectacular destruction of these satellites and thus close the film in typically Hollywood pyrotechnic fashion. Thankfully he chose to leave all of this out thus creating a much more ambiguous and beautiful statement, in my opinion. But I think for those who’ve really engaged with that film over many years, I think Kubrick's message is still very clear - in order to survive the technical space-age, to some degree or other, humanity is going to need to transcend.


Yes Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 space Odyssey is a profound master piece if for no other reason it was ahead of its time, but for that very ambiguous ending you refer to which is beautifully expressed. I was always left with an impression after watching that film that space is indeed Human’s final frontier and that hope for it’s survival is dependent on it.

To answer your question in summation, yes I think it would be nice to have hope that we will be encountering a new age of enlightenment. We are in the pains of having to go through our struggles to achieve that goal, but what it will look like is another question. Will we be able to treat each other with respect? Will we arrive to place of love, traditional yet newer values that protect our virtues of being positive? Can we dissolve our greed and dishonesty so that we evolve into a more positive future? I sure hope so, but I am afraid I will be dead and long gone before that happens, as with such movements of evolution it is over the course of many life spans (a 100 years perhaps?)not within singular life times. We often place too much of our hopes on individuals (a politician) who often can't live up to our expectations. Has politicians outlived their purpose and that perhaps another method is needed? I wonder about this question very often and everyday as I myself fail to answer by offering an outside the box alternative solution.

These next few weeks we will be exploring the genre of Documentary’s. It is IMO one the most power due to it’s ability to exploring a myriad of issues relating to the human condition within societies, as well looking at various topics in a historical perspective in order to have deeper understanding of who were are as a species and how we relate to one another in various forms of social construct within societies, both culturally and politically.

This week is the Movie “Wormwood, directed by Errol Morris, which in many respect is a hybrid within the genre that otherwise would normally allow the camera to tell the story, but in this case has a element of reenactment situational drama led by a cast of Peter Sarsguard and Molly Parker, that is masterful and profound. The premise as told by a son who became obsessed in finding out the truth about his father who was a chemist for the US Army during post world War II, who was mysteriously found dead from a supposed suicide. The son, gave up a promising career to finding this truth, while learning that his father was a CIA contractor who was secretly poisoned with LSD in an experiment that was covered up by associates within the intel agency. When questions persisted to the inaccuracies of what was being reported and the records that the CIA had kept, the son’s pursuit of this truth intensifies as he starts unraveling more suspicion as to what was officially reported and what didn’t make sense. In many ways, this film is a microcosmic look at a secret world determined to remain secret and is very compelling to watch worth seeing, if not for listening to the son’s account in how he goes about solving this mystery, but for the profundity of a secret organization such as the CIA who were complicit in committing sanctioned murder of one of their own as well subverting American resources in conducting bio-warfare experiments, during the Korean War; which on a profound level really raises the question of morality and ethical behaviors as a whole when viewing our government’s accountability to be transparent on what they are doing with tax payers money. A+ worth a look, I highly recommend it and raises the stakes of elevating such discussions in a scrupulous way!
