Another option for the exit rule is a duration stop. Say, you are trading situations where the market is expected to correct itself within 1-5 days. If the correction does not happen for a while (say 15 days), something else is going on and the future P&L gets closer and closer to random walk at best. So you close the trade.

If the movements in the asset price are mostly diffusive (volatility based) and not jumps, the duration stop is roughly equivalent to a liberal stop loss. But it does not kick you out of profitable opportunities while they are still profitable, just because

1) your broker suddenly widens the spreads to collect stop losses or for other reasons (e.g. Gain Capital),
2) the market momentarily overreacts to some news, or
3) the market is pressed for 3-5 days by the end of the month (end of the year) flows.

Equally importantly, when you close using the duration stop, you do that during liquid hours at a good bid-ask spread. And not when everybody panics and spreads widen.

It really depends on the strategy and whether you're trading at a high or low leverage. Even with stop losses I've seen strategies that apply Martengale absolutely obliterated after 100% gains. Too tight a stop for very small gains may keep the account safe, but don't always give optimal profit. Having to choose between having a stop and not having a stop. Having would be preferred, however, I'd say knowing where your stop is even before a trade is placed , is more important. Even if I don't enter that stop loss at the open of the trade, for sure I know where I'll be out of that trade

3000 pips is not a problem on low leverage. Eurchf screwed only those with SLs and high leverage.

that is exactly what i experienced, trade with SL and the trade goes immediately against me, trade without SL and the trade goes against me when i have the wrong timing and not when i have the right timing.
well i see it like this: the market is friendly. If you put an order, which a SL is, it tries to fill it ;-)
you can see it also like this: with SL the market can see you, without not.
they have them where they want them to have in propagating the absolute need of an SL. Its because of greedy and lazy nature of the brainless 95%.
But of course you need an exit point and technique. The question is am i a christmas tree shining in the dark or am i hidden in the forest...
Open where needed. Close where feeded.

never found a successful trader in here who got success without using Stop Loss , so this technique no way to avoid at all when trading , without SL your trading condition as like a ship in an ocean without a rudder, that's all.

Stop loss is essential to minimize risk. Market is unpredictable. You never sure for what will happen. So, traders should use stop loss.

i am not affiliated with these traders, not in any way, but i have been watching them for several months now, maybe at least three months approx..

their explorer does not show what their stoploss is(if any), but they have never lost a trade.. and, they are scaling into their trades..

they were trading a $130k live account, but then for some reason they are now trading a $10k live account, go figure.

i have been watching them for a few months now and they have never lost a single position.

well yes, sl protects us from a possible account crash.
but,for example, I am now using a strategy that does not require sl to be used.

Running no hard SL can work only with strict equity-based kill switches and position limits—otherwise tail events wipe you out

I can get it if someone in 2010, when the thread started, asked such questions but now if someone still thinks they can skip SL and get a way with not blowing their accounts it's really mind blowing.

Nobody successful trades without a stop loss. Period. If they tell you they do, they are either lying or they have infinite money to absorb drawdowns, which means they aren't really trading with risk. The stop loss is literally the only thing keeping you in the game long term, even if it gets hit constantly. You can adjust it wide, sure, but no stop loss equals eventual ruin. That’s just math.

Nope, at some stage you will get wiped with a search and destroy run..
Perhaps only if you have ridiculous equity to continually average your trade out, even then, just get wiped harder...
