The reason is because of interest rates. Spot pays swap fees (interest) & futures doesn't. If futures & spot were priced the same it would be a risk-free trade to collect the swap fees on NU & AU by buying spot & shorting futures in the same quantities. The market is pricing swap fees into the futures market. As the futures approaches expiration, the futures price will eventually be equal to spot. The farther out in time from expiration, the greater the difference in price between spot & futures. The higher interest rate currencies will have a larger price difference between spot & futures.
