The government did prop up the banks whilst many companies were allowed to go to the wall during the crash. I don't know of any nationalised company that still has shareholders. Setting monetary policy is power wouldn't you say ? Especially when that policy is shared with private interests. edit - so references added now.
There is somewhere online where you can access the archives of the Bank of England and view the holders of the Bank of England stock before it was nationalised. Can't remember where I found it, or what year it was, but I looked for the Rothschild and they weren't on it - though that probably means very little.
