Over the next few weeks/months, I'll be developing an application for a (web-based) trading journal. The application will be open source, and freely available.
I'm doing this mainly because it's something I need, and it's something I'll be using a lot to manage my own trades. Secondly, sitting in front of a few screens monitoring trades everyday is extremely boring. I usually play poker while trading, but that sometimes gets boring too, so this will give me something else to do.

Basically what I have in mind is an application that allows you to:
- Records trades (manually entered or imported).
- Create journal entries which can be linked to the related trade for commentary or observations. (So if you're viewing details to a trade, you could also view all the journal entries related to that trade).
- Create reports and charts.
- Record trade plans (so trades which were planned but were not taken would also be captured).
Why web-based?
- It's fast and simple to develop.
- It's platform neutral.
- Some people may like to share their trading thoughts and experiences (similar to the Journal Factory). I'm planning for it to have an option to select which entries are public, private or viewable only to certain groups.
The only problem with a web-based app is that you would need a web host – not many people have that. Although web hosting is fairly cheap these days, the app will support two modes:
- Single-user mode (if you have web hosting)
- Multi-user mode for use by community sites (such as FF, ET, etc.) which may want to provide a trading journal service.
Lastly, I'm not a software expert, but I do come from an Information Systems background. If there are any software gurus (or anyone really) that would like to help out, feel free to contact me.
I'll be posting all updates here. Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome and would be much appreciated.
