Switching Broker but keeping MetaTrader 4 ??

Hi everyone.

I was with Windsor Brokers a year ago, but had to de-fund my account due to personal reasons. I now want to re-start my Forex trading with a $300 mini-forex account, but the minimum deposit with Windsors is $2k. (BTW I can fully recommend Windsors as a broker, but I need a lower account size at present).

So, here's my problem... I loved the Metatrader 4 platform from Windsors, and I am using their demo at present - so it's in my PC. I have signed (but not yet funded) a mini account with Xpresstrade. They offer a trading terminal, with seperate Java based charts (hate them). Does anyone know how I can put the Xpresstrade terminal into the (Windsors) Metatrader platform?? Is this possible?


I did read something in another thread - that I thought was about the same sort of question... but I kinda got mixed up trying to sort it out. Do I have to remove my Windsors platform and replace it with a 'blank' version from Metaquotes ?? Oh please help !!

Hi Westwood,

Here's what I do. First, I use the download from MetaQuotes.net. This ensures that I have a generic install of MetaTrader. MT4 is designed such that all you need to connect to a broker is a server configuration file. All you need to do is to add your server configuration file to a directory in MT4 and then go into your options and insert your account number and password. It's quite simple.

Since you don't want to uninstall the download you got from Windsor, it should still work in the same manner. You just need the server file for XPresstrade. Usually, there's a live server file and a demo server file.

Many, many thanks for your (swift) reply.

I read the thread you listed, and I now understand what I would need to do. But, one post in that thread suggests that Xpresstrade would need to be set up for MT4... I don't think they are, they use a version of Tradestation for placing trades, with a seperate choice of java based charts, which take forever to load. So, in my case, will this server switch still work?

I have looked for the .srv file in the Xpresstrade (TS) folder, but there's nothing in there. Would I have to email them to ask for it ??

This approach would only work for companies using MetaTrader. Brokers install a MetaTrader server which allows all of our trading clients to connect and trade. Sorry, I was under the impression that Xpresstrade was also MT4-based.

I've just checked through the list of MT4 brokers in your thread. I'm thinking of using Fibo Group. I'll re-submit the apps.

Why fixed spread brokers might not be good for you.

Personally, I'm a die hard MT4 user. But I'm switching to Oanda and using my MT4 broker just for charting.
Oanda has REALLY good execution and is an ECN, so you get the FX market for what it is.

The last post (before yours) in this thread was more than two years ago.... Oanda is very good. I trade at Oanda myself. But Oanda is not ECN.
