Victor Niederhoffer: "In both cases I was in over my head. I didn't have the capital to be strong enough to provide a backup in the case of unforeseen events. I didn't have a proper foundation. I was playing with adversaries who were stronger than me and who actually made the rules. My base of operations was not diversified enough, and I was vulnerable to forces I couldn't withstand. I was too vainglorious.

I thought that because my method worked in markets that I knew about and had quantified, I could apply the same methods to something I didn't know about. And I had as an example [George] Soros, who would always say, "I made the most money in things I don't know about".

I still think that the crash of Oct. 27, 1997, was basically due to brokers running my position against me, knowing that I was on the ropes. The market had its greatest drop in the previous 10 years that day. And then the next day, once they were able to force me out, it went up more than it dropped.

The piranhas usually end up as fish bait A...... but unfortunately they certainly get their day thrashing around and causing mayhem. A short seller is sueing Musk at the moment as the poor fella f**cked up his timing when Musk was a bit vague on whether or not he would go private again.

As I told you before, I work with investment hypotheses. I watch whether the actual course of events corresponds to my expectations. If not, I realize that I am on the wrong track. According to my theory of initially self-reinforcing, but eventually self-defeating trends, the trend is your friend most of the way; trend followers only get hurt at inflection points, where the trend changes. Most of the times I am a trend follower, but all the time I aware that I am a member of a heard and that I am on the lookout for inflection points.

There are periods of choppy markets when my style of investing is worse than useless. I insist on formulating a thesis before I take a position. But it takes time to discover a rationale for a perceived trend in the market; and sometimes the market will reverse the trend just when I manage to formulate a theory justifying it. If it happens repeatedly, it can be devastating. I am good at riding the tide, but not the ripples of a swimming pool.

They cannot obtain perfect knowledge of the market because their thinking is always affecting the market and the market is affecting thei thinking.
