Long term vs. the short term, which one is better to invest in? This is a question that is very debated.

witch one do you prefer and why?

I don't see sense in holding a position for months, then to result with a loss - i prefer seeing my losses now and doing something about them
DON'T TRADE THE DIRECTION, TRADE THE MOVE
I have been short term trading for a long time, but during that time I have repeatedly tried to conquer (unsuccessfully) long term trading since many traders maintain that is the best way. With long term trading you have to use tiny position sizing to allow for much larger stops, and when the rewards come, you have many pips but just the same profit as a short term trade with a larger position and smaller stop. I still dabble in long term trades, but so far I haven't found them more profitable. I guess it boils down to your patience and personality.

Same here mate
short term seems to suit me best - i have tried longer term, and each time i have lost ;(
keep hearing that i should be longer term, but just cannot do it well at all. scalping is what i am good at
This is something I keep asking myself month after month after month - so now I have taken the middle path - using daily to determine the trend, I enter in the trend of daily but on the signal of the 15 min and 1 hour - this helps me to make multiple entries in the direction of the trend ( longer timeframe) yet still making my IB volumes and keeps me clean of trades at the end of every day
fifo makes long term trading difficult for us in the states, unless your using ibfx....... my preference is long term for swap positive trades and short term for swap negative trades.....

long term for me is defined as roughly the monthly atr and short term would roughly be the 240 atr...... this of course varies per pair......h
to trade and code, keep both simple... no call to impress....h

Ditto! i always feel its best to start a new trading day with a clean slate, i' am assuming daytrading is also classed as short-term trading right?
Forex, short term four weeks at most.

Futures and stocks........like holding those for at least 6 months

Agree completely - nice way to trade - daily/15 min in combo
for the moment I will trade short term (5M and 15M). Long term, I do have problems holding the trade, because I do not want to give back some good pips and trust the long term trend.
Itīs not possible for me to vote in the poll, but ... Medium/Long Term!

I need to be able to sleep good at night and in order for me to do that, ALL POSITIONS MUST BE CLOSED.

Short term is more profitable when you know what you're doing anyway....

I also prefer ay trading, but its not true that short-term trading is always more profitable... One trader I know has tripled his account size by holding onto a trade for a month (of course it helped that he grabbed the bottom of the trend)

I am attempting to switch to longer term trading for three good reasons.

1/ It forces one to look at the longer term charts (daily or even weekly) which charts are far more reliable AFA correctly reading the trend.

2/ Remember the "LMT trading system"? Well "low maintenance trading" is far less stressful and means one can get on with other things as your trade progresses, constantly locking in profit - if you've read the long term trend properly!

3/ As the last poster so rightly points out, letting good trades run on and on can very quickly increase one's account balance!

I meant it in a way as such. Lets say an instrument is trending a line. If you bought the beginning of the trend and held on until the end you will have the straight line x amount. But if you bought all the dips in the trend. You would have all the dip x amounts and most of the line x amounts which will equal more in the end. That is if you know what you are doing.

short term is often chosen because it panders to the natural urges that cause most to fail, they want it fast and big...

Consistent is the key element. If you trade h4 bars you find yourself stepping away from the charts and less lightly to make trader errors and bad judgement, and therefore consistency comes easier.
