Personally, I would only trade without a stop loss if I was using extremely low leverage. Only on daily time frame and up. Any less than that is courting a fat loss if you are unlucky enough.
I don't use low leverage but do use low position sizes on initial entries. I like Nilfmonkey's explanation at post 2677 about only having to get direction right, not timing.

To my mind it's not about luck but calculated risks, expected returns, probabilities and other tools for risk management.

Generally I only have a fraction of my funds in my account at any one time and margin calls would be the initial 'stop loss'. Anyone using non guaranteed stop losses and thinking they've removed the risk is kidding themselves (refer SNB decision (Jan 2015) impact on Swiss currency).

Trading without SL is possible and it gives good results. But you can lose all your money if the market collapses very active against you. Example CHF
Trading with TP and buy/sell limit to keep it save. With brokers who have market execution it's probably the only way no to loose much
I have tried to trade without stop loss when I started trading which is market execution. I think especially for small investors it is a very dangerous way to trade. Of course there is 'risk' factor in the nature of this business. But it is in your hands to adjust that risk in line with your targets and also capital in your hand. Trading without a stop loss turns trading sometimes into gambling. My experience tells this but I am sure that for some people it can be the other way around.
As newbie use of Stop Loss helps traders to manage risks, they decide how much they can afford to loose. If they not use stop loss market change can be a dangerous one for them. Without stop loss trading is possible, if you can easily handle uncertain situation then practice this way of trading other wise stop loss is a good supporting tool for you.
After the CHF collapse earlier this year ,you must be mad to trade without a stoploss :]
I use to trade without a stop loss myself back when I was a noob. Maximum lots on a small $1000 account and only trading 1 minute and 5 minute charts saw me blow a few of my live accounts away in hours. Thankfully those days are over.

Use a stop loss mate. It gives you that piece of mind and helps to train your money management skills and discipline.

I mean who knows what can happen when there's another crash

Trading without a stoploss is like having sex without a condom. Its not bad at all, but you should always be on guard. Someday something really bad can happen.
Stop loss - it's like the airbag. At the risk of the market every time you open an order, risking not yet puting the stop loss - it is not reasonable, I think.

I know this thread is dead but, I still trade the same way I have for years. A well-diversified inventory of currency positions, no stop losses, smart position sizing, being well-capitalized, and I not only survived the SNB chaos, but profited from it. Remember something: as I pointed out before, most of the people destroyed by the SNB chaos were using stop losses as well and it didn't help them one bit when liquidity vanished.
What amazes me is that after 2 years and 134 pages of thread there there are still people stepping in dropping phrases like: "oh yeah you gotta use a SL", "oooh it's very dangerous" "oh yeah, it can go well until it goes wrong"..... etc. etc. etc.

Read the thread buddies! Maybe then you realize that you`re only repeating the xth repetition and make a more elaborate point.

Stop losses are for beginners, so they don't loose all their money stuck in to 1 position. If they are force to get out, then the theory is they will wait a little bit, they will calm down emotionally and not make another trade just to make up for the loss as soon as possible.

I think that once you've reached certain level in your trading skills, setting up a stop loss can actually harm you, since it takes away your flexibility.

Well, stop loss is meant for those traders who are unsure of the analysis they've made on a specific stock/currency pair. For example, If a person has invested in a currency pair of EURUSD and he know inside out about the developments, be it economic or political, he can trade without a stop loss as he can predict the trend movement and if he is sure about the news' impact over the currency pair, I don't think he would like to have a stop loss on his trade as it would eliminate the flexibility from his trade. Stop loss can although be put before any announcement of important news where the trader thinks can cause a problem so, stop loss can help to limit the losses.

l mean place your trade near the nearest support or resistence level as the trend is and place the SL accordingly so you are protected by the technical levels as far the markite not going againest you
I read about news trading before and one of the trading strategies for news trading involve not using stop loss.
The idea is valid but I don't know if regular trading is a match for no-stop loss tactic.

Anyway, I will observe this thread more.
Different/opposing ideas will make us learn and understand many things.
Trading without stop losses is very risky. You have not an insurance. If you intraday trader or scalper, you can trading without stop losses, becouse oscillations of market prise is not very hight. But if you trade on the news or you are long-time trader, you should use a stop losses, how i think.

How can someone be so sure of the news or anything at all?
I think the stop loss is a must in order to not observe the dynamics of the market continuously...
