Just a quick post to find out if anyone out there is using the VT trading platform from CMS-Forex..If so, can you give me the low down on it ? Is it good ? Poor ? any experiences good or bad ?

Tell me all !!

I've been using it for a couple of months and have greatly enjoyed the platform. Recently, I've started also using a demo with MT and between the two I would definitely pick VT.

Trading on the chart is just so convenient. I have not experienced the data difficulties others have mentioned in past threads.

Yes, VT is feature packed and one of the best (if not the best) free platform available.

The charting is brilliant .. if you can get to log onto the system (frequent errors). Very slow to logon, with frequent disconnects once you do manage to connect. I have 256K ADSL, and normally use FXSolutions GTS4. The latter's charting abilities are woeful, but the platform is extremely reliable to log onto and stay logged on. The trade management side is very good.
I use DailyFX's Power Charts for my main charting.

Maybe VT's probably are intermittent?? I have tried it some 4 or 5 occasions over the past fortnight and given up in despair. After a frustrating period of getting connected, the connections easily dropped out.

I downloaded the demo for VT upon the beginning of this discussion; I have only been able to log in once. The charts took 4 minutes to appear.

Hopefully, this is a temporary server issue.

Besides being a great charting package, there are two super forums, one officially part of the VT package and the other not.

On these forums, problems described above will be addressed if not by the official moderator then very often by one of the folks on the forum.

In addition nearly every type of indicator has been made available for use in VT by various contributors. There are folks who will write code and set an idicator up so that you can download it into your personal chart package. For Free.

The latest upgrade, a few weeks ago has made VT even better. Disconnects and failures have dropped to zero for me since then.

I have found that logging in difficulties are often due to 3 things,

1. Accidentally entering my password in the user ID line, because that line is where the cursor defaults to when the first window opens.

2. Entering the wrong password ( caps lock on for example)

3. Logging on when their dealing desk is being maintained. Although this problem has been greatly reduced and opening the charts on the weekend has worked quite well in the past few months.

I have noticed that any mistake I have made while logging in will now produce the same error message: " Unable to Log in ... etc. " This message makes it SEEM as if there is a connectivity problem when in fact it has been my fault (as listed above) or their server is undergoing maintenance for a few hours on the weekend.

Sorry to hear it didnt load for you.

It is working for me right now.... 10:00 a.m. CDT 3:00 GMT

Yesterday during their usual maintenance time around 11:GMT they were down -- but as I said... that is a usual maintenance time.

Sometimes during rapid volatility they may still go down, but I have not noticed that lately.

I am not a computer guru... but am willing to coordinate some times with you.

I use a cable modem to connect to CMS; it is extremely fast compared to other connections I have used - maybe that is why I have not experienced any connectivity problems. AK

Today I noticed that it may take 20 seconds for the log on window to scroll all of its messages once you have entered your password and hit enter.

I also noticed that the first messages state: an error, and pause for a few seconds. Don't do anything at that point. Wait.. as I said maybe 20 seconds and the log on window will continue.

Tried VTrader again tonite - usual login probs.

No probs (ever, in 1 month) logging into FXSolutions GTS4, but its charting is woeful.

No probs logging into Global Forex Trading's DealBookFX2 today - powerful charting (and scripting apparently). Clean functional interface - only thing I don't like is the margin requirement.

Havn't been with them in over a year, but it used to be that the demo account feed was MUCH less reliable than the live feed. I never could figure out why they did that, but the difference was dramatic.

Several months ago I had a serious problem with VT and could not log on for several days. It was only a few of us that this happened to. Some kind of switching problem on their end. Their tech support was woeful at the time because one shift seemingly did not communicate to the next shift. They later admitted their problem and things have been good ever since.

Anyway maybe this has happened to you at this time.

I looked at GFT and have tried them on a number of occasions, especially since they have the DiNapoli studies I wanted.

I found GFT to be the least user friendly and most complicated trade site I had experienced. This was on a demo account.

In addition, a very experienced trader friend of mine had a real account with GFT and has quit them for connectivity issues AND the fact that on trades held overnight they do some kind of consolidation of open positions. I cant describe it any better than that. It might be good to ask GFT about this.

I can't for the life of me figure out how/why I can't upload screen shots or a word document to the message board.

However, last night while viewing the 5-min chart of the USD/CAD pair, I noticed two very large downward spikes on the GFT charts. Out of curiosities sake, I checked at that moment to see what my charts showed on MG Forex, Oanda and FX Solutions. None of these other 3 retailers had these huge spikes. Now, depending on whether you were long or short on the pair, those spikes could've helped or hurt you quickly. I know that I prefer a much less dramatic looking set of graphs, rather than one that looks like (and gives me) the feeling of a heart attack!

If anyone is wanting to see the Word document where I've captured the 4 retailer's screen shots, feel free to let me know where to send it to you, and I'll gladly oblige.

I the half dozen or so times I have tried to access VT, I have only gotton on once, then to be disconnected shortly thereafter.

So far the interface meets my novice needs. After a few sessions with it I know where what I need is. I have looked at 5 platforms - FXSolns had the best as far as trade accounting goes, but charting was woeful.

From my experience GFT offers reasonable accounting and good charting.

I evaluated four or five brokers before going with CMS. If you do not want to pay extra money for charting then CMS is the best by far. No one else even comes close in my opinion. I have noticed that the platform is not quite as stable in demo mode for whatever reason, but actually that seems to have improved with the latest version. One of the best things about CMS is that they are constantly striving to improve the look and performance of VT.

The biggest downfall for me is that they do not offer a web-based trading platform in addition to VTrader, which would be nice for times I am away from home and have an open trade I would like to check. I hope that helps.
I have used cms/vt for a couple of months, and have traded real accounts with FXCM, "FXSolutions," Oanda, and possibly a few others and believe the VT charting and platform concept is the very best out there. I have experienced once where my connection was dropped in the middle of trading and when I could get back online, my account was down 30%. I thought it was just a fluke, so I continued trading with them. Two days ago, I was trading the night session, which is not extremely busy, had my account raised by 20% for the session, and the market started to move against me. I immediately started closing my trades, and the platform acted like it accepted those orders by placing flags on the charts, but those close (market) orders were never finalized, and the platform did not give me the option of accepting new prices, which it usually does. So I tried to recend the close orders and issue new ones, but the platform did not allow me to do this, and I tried to re-close the trades, but the platform did not allow that either. So I was stuck and lost over 60% of my account in about 15 minutes. If the platform had functioned properly, my losses would have been less than 5%. I realize that during a news spike, this sort of thing can happen, but this was not a spike, just a moderately fast market. And bandwidth was not an issue, because I use a cable modem and pentium 4 with plenty of horse-power.

I have not had log-on problems, however, as others seem to.

My rec is have a small account with CMS, trade it occasionally, just to keep their charts, but trade with someone more reliable on a major scale.

Looks like trading issues are not the only thing one has to learn from demo FOREX trading... (I'm demo trading at present)
