Bit off topic this... but anyone got any good examples of how they've used their skills learnt from trading in other areas of life? I was thinking about this the other day in relation to getting a mortgage last year. Knowing that supply of mortgages was tight but interest rate falls were on the cards, I ended up hedging my bets by securing three, taking one for safety, and further ones as the terms bettered in my favour.

Someone asked me
"aren't you gutted you wasted several hundred pounds on the securing the first two that you didn't take?"
I didn't get it - I was delighted I'd saved myself £20k over the long run.
"But you could have just waited and got the same results"
Of course the reason being I didn't know for certain that I would get a better offer. I knew terms would get worse, I just didn't know where the bottom was.

Anyone got any other examples? Where it's helped or hindered?

Without trying getting to philosophical, I would say that trading is pretty much parallel to one's life, in general. We fail to achieve success in trading for the same reasons we fail to achieve success in life. Example: lack of self mastery will not only cost you money and time in the markets, but it will equally do so in your everyday life.

It's unlikely to have success in one area, and not the other.

Trading teached me the value of persistence. There's really no free lunch, or if there is, it's highly likely that someone will find it and eat it before you.

The traits that Trading can teach you in life is...

Persistence
Discipline
Patience
Dont jump the gun too soon
Its okay to lose and be wrong sometimes

This one though "Its ok to lose/be wrong sometimes" is a good one since society teaches you not to be wrong. being wrong in school = you fail, being wrong at a job = you lack skill, Being wrong on a Trade = Its alright, Just a play that didnt work out.

I will second this. I could add that you also learn to be acute, make smart decisions( and stomach the fact that some of these decisions will bomb on us), be well-read and revere knowledge, learn to be decisive, take quick action, be enthusiastic and be relentless.

1. Trading taught me, that most people will dream, maim and possibly kill for easy overnight success, but they will never do, the simple but painful things like being disciplined and working for the same.

2. Trading taught me, that we cant see the future but surely anticipate possibilities.

3. Be pragmatic and not emotional. When in distress, sit back and think pragmatically.(Financial Drawdowns in trading, Emotional Drawdowns in Life, Failures in career)

Trading has taught me that if you can become a profitable trader, you can do pretty much anything

well, after 4 years trading I become more "suspect" about everything , sort of contrarian. Like reading newspaper, if interested, I will try to dig more information which the author don't/want to reveal yet. Everyone have his agenda/motive, and talk/act where he sits.
