Hello fellow traders,

I have MT4 running 24/7 at home. My work’s network security is extremely high, so I cannot install MT4 at work.

I need to access my trades at least every couple of hours, sometimes at work, sometimes out in the field, sometimes when I travel.

I looked at some options and I bought a SanDisk Cruzer Micro U3 USB Flash Drive – 8GB. I downloaded my broker’s MT4 platform, twice, for 2 accounts directly into the flash drive.

Today is the first time testing this and I was very excited at work. So I opened the first MT4 icon and it wouldn’t even open. I opened the second MT4 icon and it opens but there is no connection (I am guess due to network firewall?)

I am as far from a techie as possible. Can anyone please take me step by step into what I can do to get access to MT4 during the day with my flash drive? If this is absolutely not possible, what other options do I have? I do not want to drag a laptop with me everyday and pay $60 for broadband access. Any and all help is appreciated!

Perhaps you have a proxy at your work ?
Why don't you set up RDP or VNC to the PC running MT4?

As Craig said, remote desktop rocks. Remote desktop is a way to connect to your personal computer remotely. It's somewhat secure and offers some nice flexibility.

"RDC" or "remote desktop client" exists in many flavors. My windows mobile "smart phone" has an RDC that allows me to close or modify trades. My laptop has one too, so even the lappy loses it's internet connection, the home system can still monitor trades.

I've coded several "indicators" that send alerts via email, and email is directed to SMS, so my cell phone beeps when it's time to close a trade or when an anticipated setup comes along. RDC in, do the work, move on. I can trade from anywhere in the country doing that.

As for the firewall issue, this happens sometimes. RDC might not be blocked directly, and perhaps your admins would unblock it if it was. If you can't get thru, you can route thru a VPN. That's tricky, and requires technical experience, but basically you'd install a VPN server on your home server and route out. If Microsoft's VPN won't work, openVPN will. Since openVPN operates thru SSL you can use any single TCP port you want, ie: port 80. At that point you only need to run the openVPN client from your memory stick and RDC in to bypass the firewall.

I thought about it, but I want to simplify my life, plus I am not a gadget girl..thanks for the suggestion anyway.

If there is any direct route past the firewall, say on port 80 for web browsing, you could run an ssh tunnel with "putty" on that port; back to an ssh server running on your home PC. You could then run Metatrader over the tunnel and out to the internet from your connection at home, or just RDP the box at home, whatever suits.

The bad news here is that you'd really need to have half an idea what you were doing to get all that working....You might also want to consider that if your employer has gone to the trouble of installing a firewall with outbound restrictions, they probably won't be too pleased about you worming your way around it!

I have a slant on this and I don't mean anything nasty to the OP but:-

When you work for someone else you are paid to do their work,you are not paid to trade part time and work for the company part time.

Just a different thought on this in these difficult times.

I understand what you are saying and I agree. However, in my case, please understand that I need to access my account 2 or 3 times during my 10 hour work shift for about 3 minutes each. I am sure my employer would not mind that one of my 15 minute break be split into 3, 5 minute breaks.
