{quote} Oh they will thrive for sure!!! We have Pine trees everywhere here and they grow very quickly too. The real NZ Christmas tree is the Pohutukawa tree, which is native to NZ. There grow on the coast and around lakes and rivers and they only flower at Christmas...they are such beautiful trees. I'll take some photo's when they are in flower soon, by the river which is 10 minutes walk from here. {image}

{quote} Whitney Houston.....niece of Dionne Warwick who herself was a great singer. Whitney was beautiful and had such a powerful voice as you can hear in this song.....especially at the end. I don't know what she saw in that loser Bobby Brown, but that's when it all started to go wrong for her. So sad...... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96aAx0kxVSA

{quote} You may remember Mackenzie Phillips, daughter of John and Michelle? Here she is as a young girl in American Graffiti. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SKfkvvtqN0

John definitely lost his way, and by choice.

From Mackenzie's book,

"From that point on Dad was ephemeral. He developed a taste for transience, moving from rented penthouse to hotel to mansion without giving
notice, without paying bills, without telling anyone his new number. He’d say, “Pay my bill, pack my shit, and meet me there.” Pay, pack, and follow was what he called it, and that is what he named his final album, recorded with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards in the seventies, but released after his death in 2001.

Recorded in the 1970s for release on the Rolling Stones' record label "Rolling Stones Records" but remained unissued until 2001

Oh Virginia - John Phillips (album Pay Pack & Follow).

Mick Taylor on electric guitar
Ron Wood on bass
Keith Richards on acoustic guitar
Michelle Phillips, Mackenzie Phillips & Mick Jagger background vocals

That's a hell of a band isn't it? I was asked yesterday by some musicians that I know, 'if I had a gun at my head and I could only choose one guitarist as my favourite, who would I choose?' My answer was Mick Taylor!!

But yes, John went 'off the rails' in a big way. It's easy to blame the drugs etc etc, but a lot of people have done a lot of drugs over the years and have turned out to be good and responsible people. I think that fame, money and drugs didn't do John any favours, but (with respect seeing as I never met the man) if you're an asshole, then that's part of you and it comes to the surface because of drugs and the situation etc. The drugs didn't cause you be an asshole, they just brought it to the surface. That may not be correct, but it's how I see it.

Another favourite of mine is the late Roy Buchanan, US guitarist, first worked with Dale Hawkins, released over 15 solo albums. Died after hanging himself by his own shirt on 14th Aug 1988 in Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, Virginia after being arrested for drunkenness.

The Boss, Bruce Springsteen, 'who had the 1985 US No.2 & UK No.4 single 'Dancing In The Dark', 1994 UK No.2 single 'Streets of Philadelphia' is also having a birthday today. His most successful studio albums, Born in the U.S.A. and Born To Run showcase a talent for finding grandeur in the struggles of daily American life; he has sold more than 65 million albums in the United States and more than 120 million worldwide.
