Markets have gone from panic to euphoria in just 72 hours.

On Monday, traders were pricing in the risk of a prolonged Middle East conflict after renewed fighting around the Strait of Hormuz sent Brent crude above $114/barrel. Oil surged nearly 6%, Treasury yields climbed above 5%, and equities pulled back as fears grew that higher energy prices could reignite inflation and delay future Fed cuts.

Fast forward to Wednesday, and the mood has completely flipped.
The S&P 500 hit fresh all-time highs after reports suggested the US and Iran are moving closer toward a potential agreement that could gradually reopen the Strait of Hormuz and ease the ongoing blockade. Oil dropped back toward $95/barrel, easing inflation fears and helping risk appetite return across global markets.

The shift highlights just how important geopolitics has become for traders right now.

This week has essentially been one giant repricing of:

At the start of the week, oil surged above $114/barrel as renewed fighting around the Strait of Hormuz pushed inflation fears straight back into the market. Equities pulled back, and long-end yields pushed above 5% as investors rapidly repriced the risk of prolonged disruption.

Fast forward a few sessions, and that entire narrative has started to reverse.
Oil has fallen back toward the $95–$102 range, the S&P 500 has pushed to fresh all-time highs, yields have eased, and the dollar has softened; driven by growing expectations that the US and Iran are moving closer toward a framework that could gradually reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

This isn’t just a relief rally, it’s a macro repricing.

Lower oil reduces inflation pressure.
Lower inflation pressure reduces the need for restrictive policy.
Less restrictive policy supports higher equity valuations.

Fundamental Friday

This week confirmed one thing:
The macro backdrop is still resilient, but positioning is starting to shift.

Let’s start with the data.

US labour market strength continues to hold.
Non-Farm Payrolls came in at 115K vs 65K expected (185K previous), with unemployment steady at 4.3% and wages in line at 0.2% m/m. Despite slowing from prior months, the data still points to a labour market that isn’t breaking.

At the same time, inflation expectations eased slightly.
Prelim UoM inflation expectations dropped to 4.5% (from 4.7%), while sentiment softened to 48.2 vs 49.7 expected, suggesting consumers are still feeling pressure. But not enough to derail growth.

Earlier in the week, ISM Services printed 53.6 (vs 53.7 expected) and JOLTS came in broadly in line, reinforcing the idea of moderation, not contraction.

Globally, central banks remain in a holding pattern.
The RBA held rates at 4.35% (unchanged), while the Fed sits at 3.75%, with markets now reassessing how restrictive policy really needs to be as oil prices fall back.

Other major economies remain relatively loose in comparison:
EUR: 2.15%
CAD: 2.25%
NZD: 2.25%
JPY: 0.75%

This divergence continues to shape FX flows and capital allocation.

Now to positioning, where things get interesting.

COT data shows clear shifts beneath the surface:
AUD longs increased → 78.7K (from 71.9K)
EUR longs reduced → 32.2K (from 35.7K)
JPY shorts sharply reduced → -61.7K (from -102.1K)
GBP shorts increased → -63.9K (from -60.6K)

In commodities and indices:
Gold longs increased → 163.3K (from 159.6K)
Oil longs reduced → 178.8K (from 191.9K)
S&P 500 shorts increased slightly → -103.9K (from -101.4K)

What does this tell us?
Positioning is no longer aligned with pure “risk-on”.
Oil longs are being reduced despite geopolitical risk → less conviction in sustained supply shock
Gold longs are rising → hedging demand still present
Yen shorts are being covered → defensive positioning creeping back in
Equities still climbing, but with increasing short exposure → less consensus in the rally

Fundamentally, the picture looks like this:
Growth is holding.
Inflation is easing at the margin.
Central banks remain constrained, but not tightening further.

But positioning suggests:
Markets aren’t fully convinced.

Looking ahead, next week brings the real test.
US CPI (forecast 0.3% m/m core) will be key in confirming whether this disinflation narrative holds.
Retail sales, PPI, and UK GDP will add further clarity on whether growth can remain resilient without reigniting inflation pressures.

So while markets have rallied this week, the underlying fundamental story is more balanced than price suggests.
Resilience is there, conviction is not.
