Education for Investing at a B.A. Level

Hey I'm wondering what courses are available for investing. Now to be specific, I'm not looking for "Franks 100 Amazing Secrets for Trading 101" or even a weekend college course.

I want to know what B.A. level courses there are for trading/investing. The closest thing I can think of is Economics, but I'd really love to hear what other's here have to say.

My brother got his MBA from The University Of Pheonix. He said they had several courses on investing and business structure. I believe that is a satellite type university that offers courses at night and weekends and also telecourses... You might want to look into that.

I think some of the universities in New York and Chicago have trading courses.

My school (univ of vermont) offered some good investing classes while I was there but the prof was the biggest A*hole so I decided not to take that path(I had him for finance made me want to kill myself).

Some courses we have
Financial Institutions&Markets-Study of level and structure of interest rates and characteristics of financial institutions and markets. Topics include market vs. natural rate of interest, interest rate structure, behavior of interest rates

Security Val & Portfolio MgmtExamination of theories and evidence on the investment decision process including operations of equity securities markets, market efficiency, financial asset prices, and portfolio management.

Options and Futures--Financial derivatives - options, futures and swaps. Topics include: structures of the markets for exchange traded and over-the counter derivatives; identification and exploitation of arbitrage opportunities; use and misuse of derivatives to hedge risk in both financial and product markets.

and some other portfolio mgmt courses that they don't seem to have listed anymore.

My friends friend who went to Tulane, said he took courses there in Forex Market, and the Prof was a retired trader from forex and options.

If you check out the individual school sites you are looking for you can find course lists, and past course lists usually.

My son is currently in college hoping to pursue a career in trading and he has been advised that a degree in economics with a minor in international business would be a very favorable background to be hired by some of the big firms. Working for a firm before going off on his own would be a great background, I feel.

Well then, try Pace University and NYU in NY and Univ of Chicago in you know where. These are the trading centers of the US after all.

I was looking a while back and Golden Gate University in San Fransisco was the only school I could find offering a masters in finance in the country.

Google financial engineering. There's a couple of schools around the country that have programs. It's basically a masters in trading, there's one school that even has its own pit, forget the name of it, i'm pretty sure it's simulated though.

Just did a google search myself, Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley has an MFE program. Masters in Financial Engineering. I'm sure the program is very competitive. I'm not the college type but maybe someone here will find it of use.

Kent State University has a Masters of Science in Financial Engineering. I think this is the one with the pit. Look in the FAQ section and there's a link that shows a list of financial type programs around the world. You need to be a real egghead to get into one of these programs though.

As far as BA level goes, I think the degrees that can help the most are math, economics, finance and computer programming. I asked Boris Schossberg one time what he thought was a good degree for a trader and he said economics or political science. He didn't say why poly sci though.

I think the person who learns the basics and then trades for 4 years will be far more advanced than the person who gets a 4 year degree in anything. I think college is overrated.

There's a huge shortage of skilled craftsmen these days because the education establishment has convinced everyone that if you don't go to college you're stunting yourself. In reality you can make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year at your own plumbing business with a few people working for you, and that's just one example.

My advice to a kid who's got good hands and is interested go to a trade school then eventually when you're a master craftsmen you'll make real nice $$$, and if you're ambitious start your own company and make millions. There's nothing stopping you from doing this and trading too. Maybe I should take my own advice?
