No, it is totally irrelevant to the grid size progression. No mater what the grid size is determined, buy manual setting or by ATR, the grid size progression is base on the determined grid size to calculate the virtual SL. As attached source codes:

the variable grid_size once determined, never changed within the whole cycle unless a new cycle is initiated, and this is the only place Icarus refers to the value of grid_size to calculate the virtual SL.
Also, gs_progression is use in the CalculateVolume() function to calculate the volume of the last position, and use to calculate virtual SL as shown above.
It is no reason that ATR_Grid_Size() will affect the grid size progression behavior of any form.

No point in quoting code at me, I am no coder and do not understand any of it.

All I can say is that when ATR grid is turned on, at some point the grid stops expanding as per my screen shots in post 1742. When ATR grid is turned off this does not happen, that is no co-incidence. So I will simply not be using the ATR grid option in any future testing, simple.

Hi, hard fighting today, enabled unbalance controll using it manually when going under 100%, was 10 Lot long in a fast falling market. In the area of 80% Margin I turned it off and finally market recovered. Closed some of the buy orders in win and used 500 Eur if it to close the highest loosing buy order...

Do you really understand ATR indicator? If not, don't use Atr_Grid_Size() to determine the grid size.
For if your ATR settings is not proper, and calculate a very small grid (close to zero or zero), then the grid size progression won't work. Because any number multiply by zero is zero. From your post 1742, it seems that you have a zero grid size. That's why the EA will keep on adding new positions progressively till the max positions is reached.

This is what i am trying to explain, Using short tf and small period will always create very low grid size, this is very dangerous because if there is a big trend , you will be liquidated in one spike or drop in the market. Have to understand ATR well, to use it. I swear by it, it works wonders for me. Because i am able to control it to my style and strategy.

I have not changed the ATR settings from the default settings that are contained in the EA. As I have repeatedly stated I am not fully au fait with ATR so have not attempted to play with the settings, entrusting that the default ones are suitable.

I just did not understand why the grid would expand until around the xth position and then just stop expanding, I thought th whole point of a grid is that it continues to expand. Am I right in assuming that the default settings you coded into the EA are only viable up to a grid of around x trades then and are not finite as I would expect a grid to be?

I would think that if a grid had a max size it is capable of being then there should also be a safety built into the EA to stop it opening new trades once the grid hits its max?

sinse you experimenting with the hedging, can you please change the code of Icarus in order to reverse the Buy and Sell grids. The idea is to build a Buy grid going Up and Sell grid going Down and to close all Buys and Sells together when the trend moves in profit for the symbol.
p.s. I've used such EA in MT5, but I cannot find it for MT4.

No, I did not code the EA to have a max size of grid. There is a setting of max_position that you can set, the default should be 6. Means only open at most 6 position in a cycle. (I did not code this part of Icarus, it remains the same as original Icarus).

Atr_Grid_Size() only give you a dynamic grid size to Icarus, no more and no less. Many people have tested Icarus and also tested ATR function for several months. You are the first one to have such issue of ATR. Perhaps you can check the Journal to see whether or not there are error message. If you are running fore test, also check the Experts to see if there are error message.

Also, as I have mentioned before, do not trust the default settings of any EA. If you understand those indicators you can tune them for good or you should not to use those indicators. The original Icarus is without any indicators to decide the moment to open a position and/or for helping to decide a grid size dynamically. In fact, a grid trading logic doesn't need indicators to trade. I have my own grid trading EAs, with the trend or against the trend, I didn't use any indicators. Before you use any indicator, I suggest you should run Icarus without applying any indicator first. Then, if you hope to have a better result, you can try to apply indicators one by one to see whether or not the result comes better.

Even I use ATR for grid size, I also have to tune the settings of ATR symbol by symbol as well as broker by broker. For different symbols have their different price actions, also the optimal settings of ATR are different. Different brokers have different spreads for symbols and they are affect the profit you can have in a trade, that is, the appropriate grid sizes are also a minor different.

I give you Icarus_4.6 with partical close of the grid mechanism. 4 indicates that after 4 trades it will start closing the last and the first trade when they sum up in profit. 0 means disabled.

This make EA so much stable... test it

Hi Benson,

what you are suggesting will give us a total new EA (adding position in trend direction)...Therefore I would ask you to open up your own thread on this. I tried such an EA some years ago and can let you know I was not pleased with the outcome...
