How much equity do you have to have in order to trade without the middleman of retail brokers? Do you have to have certain legal licences to trade at this next level as well?

A broker like interactive brokers would do the trick. Doesn't come down to your account balance, but broker trust.

well the reason I ask, is because all brokers have a finite liquidity limit. I.e. if you were trading directly with the banks with 300 lots, you would get a better fill time than a retail broker. Not that im trading that much yet, but I was curious if I ever got to that point.
So cyguy, if I understand you correctly, FIX API is what you are looking for. This will assure direct access to the liquidity pools, faster execution and so on. Many brokers claim to offer such connectivity but those that really do, charge a lot of money due to the specifics and costs involved. Usually we are talking about commission per million traded or minimum monthly fee. On top of that you will need someone with IT skills to assure the smooth connection from your side.
Long story short, such solution is most suitable for institutional clients and high networth individuals.

yah, I understand that, but that doesn't fully answer the question, what is considered high networth, 10 million equity? 100 million? 1 billion? 10 billion?

upon further investigation, looks like if you trade with dukascopy bank, they need at least $100000 to trade with a FIX API, wonder how much it costs for IT guys.. 100000 a year to keep it smooth?
