Basically it appears to be bust, but not quite done dying.

In the news today we have pearls from AXA Insurance; who are dumping all their tobacco related stocks ... about $1.3bn (apologies for inaccuracy).

The reasoning is that AXA provides healthcare insurance and related products, and therefore it is obtuse to be holding equities in the very companies whose products jeopardize people's health.

Well I can kind-of see that line of thought ... but ... here is the twist. With the advent of anti-tobacco legislation, et al, a number of companies such as Marlboro (no longer allowed to appear on the rear wing of an F1 car) have created alternative similarly branded product such as clothing, so that their brand can be legitmately advertised, and I have no idea whether this ploy is still being pursued. Other tobacco companies went along to the Czech government and sold the idea of dispensation rights for tobacco companies on the basis that said government could make more in taxes than the increase in health costs that were likely to appear. Allegedly....

It therefore seems odd that AXA have abandoned a reasonable hedge against their insurance costs, especially considering that a number of tobacco companies are expanding into the blossoming e-cigarette market. I wonder if a significant hedge-fund holding will appear on the books.

BTW: it seems that the e-cigarette was invented by a Chinese chemist who was fed-up with paying the costs of his habit, and also wanted to clean-up the whole process (acknowledgements to a recent edition of the Horizon program, BBC Television).

Today's news: the UK now generates more than 20% of its power from renewable resources, according to the BBC. IIRC the figure was close to 25%.

The UK now ranks #4 in the world for the amount spent on 'renewable' energy, after the EU, the USA, and China.

Also today some marketing drivel fell through the door. Part of the 'please move your account to us' pitch included some numbers on raw-fuel usage and grammes of CO2 per kWhr. Apparently the average UK figure for CO2 per kwhr is 369gm. EDF claim only 229gm due to the fact that more than 50% of their energy is nuclear.

An extrapolation from these figures yields that drivers of Tesla model-S can reduce their CO2 gm/km from 114 to around 70 by switching their provider to EDF (assuming 275 miles from a full charge of the 85-kWhr battery).

Those subsidies for UK renewable energy are being removed, renewable energy will have to stand on its own two feet now.

Agreed, I am watching a couple of funds, which invest in wind and solar power, to see what will happen.

I used to hold in 3 funds, and researched quite a lot into the arena.
Then when the subsidies were cut a company called Infinis was re-absorbed by the Venture Fund that floated it.

Yesterday a note from Barclays: ".... upgraded their recommendation on shares of Ophir Energy andPremier Oil while downgrading stock in Det Norske, Genel and Ithaca Energy." ...oh goody

Apparently they also see a recovery to $70/bbl from 2018 onwards.

Premier Oil, and I confess that I haven't managed that position very well.

There is plenty of upside in Premier Oil, seems like it would be a good hold, especially if you managed to get in close to the bottom.

All my oil holdings are in the etf XOP - diversification, generally good companies, and I think Shale is going to be very resilient = quite a large position.

I did not average down when the price was very low, so I'm still under water but not below snorkel depth. From a recent missive their operating costs are $17/bbl so there is plenty of margin and on an average bill price of $45bbl they should achieve gross revenue of $1bn in the current year. Also they have some hedging in place. They have all sorts going on globally, including gas in the Philippines which seems to be performing well. As soon as the market decides that demand will match supply there will be a general lift.

I had a small punt on the Falklands field, and ended up with a holding in Rockhopper.....

I am under-researched on UK native E&P. I am thinking that if Brexit 'Leave' succeeds then development of the south of England oil field around Gatwick will become of great interest to HM government. So....

It is hard to average down, harder than people think, because when you finally do buy you tend to do some thinking this is the bottom. I have tried to learn from my prior mistakes of not averaging down on Apple, I try to average down over a period of time, i.e. added 1 of 3 positions over a period of 3 months. Or add every x % drop.

For my Oil position I had enough capital to be averaging down at rock bottom oil prices. As of right now I am up by amount 25% on my oil positions, but I expect to at least double my money over the next year or two, and maybe even triple it over 3-5 years.

No need to worry on your part, there is plenty of upside to come when prices do rise.
What broker are you with btw?

Exactly. In hindsight it was probably obvious that Jan/Feb was a good time to 'add', but when you are playing with volatile stocks.....

I am break-even on Amerisur and looking for 100% eventually.
Premier I am looking for 150% in a couple of years, and they may restart dividends at some point.

My stock trading is un-levered. I use two ISA providers and one SIPP platform (containing only Trusts and Funds).

I had an account with interactive investor, it cost 20 to open, and the same to close, and a further 20 per month or some rubbish like that - maybe that has changed.... Which is ridiculous cost, I didn't stay there long.

I am now with X-O as a UK platform which is significantly cheaper but I have yet to make a single trade on that platform, all of my money is USD denominated and in a US broker. US brokers are multiples better than UK brokers, the difference in quality is night and day.

I need to look up these SIPP platforms, I opted out of my work pension but I will opt in next time around if I can control it via some kind of SIPP.

The stock prices of oil companies should swing dramatically upwards when they start reporting profits again, the costs will stay the same so all that extra money coming from oil prices will go straight to the profit line.

For self-trading there are two main companies; Hargreaves Lansdown and AJ Bell. There are others such as TDDI who offer SIPP using the AJ Bell management system. I'm not quite sure how that works.....

If you run your own SIPP it should be possible to persuade your employer to direct any of their pension support into that account, and since it is a pension you can't get your hands upon it until the normal rules allow. However most HR people have zero comprehension on running pensions ... so good luck!

I forgot to mention, all my platforms are with different providers to de-risk my portfolio.

Probably less of an issue than it was about 5 years ago, unless you're with Deutsche Bank....

Yeh that is a good idea, better safe than sorry.

Cheers for the information on SIPPs brokers, question for you though.

Because they come with the pension, I think, do you get a contribution for your work/gov. for every 1£ you pay in? If yes do you know how much that is - I really know very little about this.
