Do you find it really hard to trade the USDJPY?

One day it's going down 100 pips the next it's going up possibly the same number of pips. OMG.

That's because price is moving that you can make pips ...

People's answers will perhaps vary according to (i) the times of day they like to trade, and (ii) the extent to which volatility is significant to their trading methods, among other factors.

For myself, overall, I find anything/JPY a little harder and less profitable to trade than Cable, the Euro(/USD), USD/CHF and even USD/CAD. But I find USD/JPY less difficult than GBP/JPY.

I think this pair will go further up. Probably even to 135 or even higher. Few months age tried to fight the trend learned my lessons in a hard way

yes but it's not easy to predict. You can make a lot or you can lose a lot.

Have to agree with xela here, it simply depends on your trading. Uncertainty in the direction for longer than an hour is simply of no importance to me. I'm on the minute chart with a short holding time. USDJPY is one of the 4 pairs I have on my screens but I do not trade it as often as the other pairs.

One good thing about this pair and i guess the major jpy pairs is that they move a lot and high movement = higher potential to get more profits but higher risks. I have been searching on youtube for usdjpy trading tutorials but cannot seem to find any comprehsive ones. The typicals support/resistance butterfly etc patterns that i try on this pair i don't really trust them. I just don't believe they follow other pairs.

I stay totally away from the Yen pairs GPB JPY and USD JPY as a starter,just because it is fast moving,constantly fluctuating and have high spreads .I might blow my account in seconds if I happen to try

Volatility, and sudden changes in direction in the yen pairs, is at least partly due to 'safe haven flows'. The JPY is considered a safe currency, and when the market acts to reduce risk (e.g. stock markets are falling; a geopoltically based announcement has created uncertainty; etc) a number of institutional traders tend to move their holdings from the high yield currencies (e.g. AUD, NZD) to safer currencies. Then as risk diminishes, the reverse applies. Hence as the markets jump between 'risk on' and 'risk off', then JPY based pairs tend to fluctuate accordingly.

For that reason I consider it particularly risky to hold long JPY positions (e.g. AUDJPY) going into a weekend. If a crisis type event occurs over the weekend, price could potentially gap downward significantly to Monday's open.

On the contrary, I find the USD/JPY one of the best pairs to trade ( specifically for scalping)..I've had some decent returns on my USD/JPY trades during the Asian session...I used a scalping price action strategy; it was mainly a simple support and resistance method with some reversal patterns on the 1 minute and 5 minute charts...All in all, I've had a very good experience with this pair...Cheers
