SRT am I reading the chart wrong? Lets use IB for example they claim in Q2 46.5 % of their accounts were profitable and 53.5 % took a loss. Where are you getting 80-90% (which is probably true).

Thank you so much Srt. This is exactly what i was looking for. 30% of the people make money at this, that's very good. Can you share the source of this statistics? Do they publish any more details? Statistics on account age and profitability would be great one.

I'm saying the reports from IB are correct as you stated. The "80-95% of traders lost money" is WRONG if you look @ the actual reports from live accounts at these brokers. That's the total of ALL traders @ each broker & not just a sample/survey of traders. The "80-95%" is what you commonly read from articles but nothing to back up these estimates (wild guesses).

Thank you for the reply. The statistics posted by Srt, if true, is what I was after.
You said your are profitable, Can you tell us how long have you been trading profitable? I have been trading since 2007, I still cannot make decent money from this consistently to quit my job to do this full time. As many here my problem is controlling the emotions, I can trade without any emotion problems when i do small lots but then the profits are not big enough for me to do this full time. I cannot control my impulse trades when i go big lots.

These reports don't tell us nothing but the profitable % within this period (Q2, Q3, etc ...). The real long term profitable % is certainly far less.

Keep in mind that in the Q2 % in profit, there are certainly who are in loss in Q3 ... In other words, the profitable traders in Q2 aren't necessary the same profitable traders in Q3 ...

You are correct but if you look at the statistics published for the previous quarters all of them are around 30+% profitable accounts makes me believe the real numbers cannot be low as 5%. It would be great if we can get statistics on account age and profitability. Back in 2010 my friend (mentor) got call from FXCM to work as a some type of prop trader arrangement with them because he was consistently making money in his fxcm account. Consistent ones should be getting offers like the one above i guess.

in the short term "wins" will approach 50%, in the long term it falls towards 0%

the statistic that 90% of traders lose refers to continual long-term trading, which is probably accurate

Let's take a very basic example with 4 traders A-B-C-D with their own P/L %:

1/ Q2 : A (+10%), B (+35%), C (-25%), D (-18%) ... we have here 50% of traders in profit

2/ Q3 : A (-15%), B(-52%), C (+15%), D (+9%) ... we have here 50% of traders in profit

If we combine Q2 and Q3 ... 0% of trader in profit ...

I know it is an extreme example but it was to illustrate my point that in long term the quarters % means nothing.

There aren't many successful traders who waste time posting on these threads. The reason is that there are too many here who are ignorant, opinionated and envious. I don't wish to argue with people who think they know how to trade but can't even post a chart. I consider my presence here as a bad habit which I need to lose. I would never post the results of my main trading accounts here.
