UK Terror news has caused GBP to go down 1.9025, then up 1.9095, then down to 1.9000 again!

I just woke up from a short nap when it hovered 1.9050. When I got to the computer, it was 1.9000!

I think its going to drop further in US session when people wake up here. Just my opinion. So i am short on it.

A terrorist plot to blow up planes in mid-flight from the UK to the US has been disrupted, Scotland Yard has said.


It is thought the plan was to detonate up to three explosive devices smuggled on aircraft in hand luggage.

Police have arrested about 18 people in the London area after an anti-terrorist operation lasting several months.

Security at all airports in the UK has been tightened and delays are reported. MI5 has raised the UK threat level to critical - the highest possible. <!-- E SF -->

According to MI5's website, critical threat level means "an attack is expected imminently and indicates an extremely high level of threat to the UK".

Home Secretary John Reid confirmed that there had apparently been a plot "to bring down a number of aircraft through mid-flight explosions causing a considerable loss of life". According to BBC sources the "principal characters" suspected of being involved in the plot were British-born.

Tell that to the GBP. It is indeed high time for it to go down! Its freakin too expensive; i was banking on that yesterday but BoE said the economy is on track and GBP did not weaken. Perhaps today, these terrorists will make sure GBP go down.

GBP has been regaining value once again hitting back 1.9030.

I do wish US will wake up dumping GBP en mass.

I flew into Manchester from Istanbul at 10am BST today( 2 hours ago!) and there was a low key police presence but when I got in a taxi and left the driver told me (and I saw myself) that all the entrance roads had major police units and it seemed that they were actually turning cars away. I now hear that BA has cancelled all internal fights until 3pm and also selected international flights which will cause major disruption at LHR.

This time, the intelligence service got it right.

I dont know how the asian market would react when they woke up amidst the strong fall. GBP is slowly moving back to mid 1.89s. This time I'd wait for the aussies/kiwis to wake up and perhaps they might start shorting as they did a few days back.

I would like to hear a decent theory on why the USD strengthens because terrorists are "after us". I heard the term "safe haven" traders are buying the USD. Anyone have a good theory about this?

Even the GBP lost to the USD and the UK are the guys that "foiled" their plot. Anyone actually understand why this occurs?

the only thing i can say is that when geopolitical risks r at stake, market prefers to buy a currency that is thought as "safe"...A year ago I could see that that currency was the swiss franc. After the London bombing for example all turned their attention to swiss. When the Iran situation started everyone was selling dolars and bying swiss franc like mad. After the N Korea situation though things changed. All of a sudden the safe haven currency was american $. Market started selling the yen like crazy and bought dolars. The same thing happened when the Mid East situation happened. The market found is new safe haven currency to buy. On Thurday it was expected for the pound to drop all these pips as the whole thing unfolded from England as a base. Market again turned its attention in buying the dolar and sold the pound. These reactions are fast and nervous. It came from England so lets sell the pound. On friday the Mid East tension although first beleived to be seized , continue with more ground ofensive from Israels part,and market again bought their favourite safe currency. Dolar in that situation is the safest currency as Europe , UK are much closer to any offensive in Mid East than US. And that makes the currency more attractive (I actually read this from various neews sources )

So, for now we have $ as a safe haven currency but untill when?
