on what TF is the volume collected from? Can I have 1 year worth of 1 min data?



When I try to calculate 1-2 years worth of 1min data with Excel, Excel often produces some strange errors and needs long to calculate this



I have used my various volume profiles now for quite some time. My idea, when you remember, was to synchronize them in their lookback period to the Murrey Math charts.

I still believe, that the volume profile approach is right, but the Murrey math synchronized approach is not as precise as I would like to see it.


When one compares the leves obtained with 1h candles to the ones with 5 min candles, the difference is far to huge. It is OK for getting the big picture, but within the big picture one is suddenly confronted with simply to much different levels.


So my next approach is to try to calculate as many 1min data as I can get. I think when I can get 2-3 years worth of 1min data one should be able to analyse most of the situations.

3 years worth of 1min data will result in approximately 1 Mio data rows

I can get this much data easily from Dukascopy. Plus: they offer real traded volume.

Since Excel may be way too slow for this task, which program would you recommend for calculating this huge amount of data?

I think sierra chart does what more than you need. Even if I plot the data as 4 hour chart, but the data is kept within the data file in very small time frame :http://www.sierrachart.com/index.php...lTimeFOREX.php.

you can use sierra chart to plot Dukascopy data as long as you save the data in a format that can load into sierra charts, and then plot its volume profile with sierra charts. To use sierra charts' volume by price indicator, the monthly charge is 27 US dollars, to use the price volume opportunity indicator the charge is 40 us dollars. The company is in Europe so you can pay in euro.

If you can get real volume Dukascopy data, I would just use the volume by price indicator for $27 us dollars per month. It should not be hard to save Dukascopy data in sierra charts format (only a matter of some script writing to convert the data).

it is very neat to use sierra charts volume by price indicator, it has a lot of options you can tweak.

I would consider sierra charts the most complete trading software out there one can find. I did a lot a research before I settled to this software package. It can do whatever needs one can think of. It is a Windows software, but can run in Linux under wine, just like the following chart under wine in Lunix.

20 chart windows processed at the same time. of course need some computer power. It is running under wine in linux on zotac zbox ID81: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16856173041, using about 60% cpu.

How about binning 5 pip data into one volume bar and making bar wider so there is no gap between bars? A 5 pip bar still has good resolution, and the bar width cover 5 pips.

Hi FFLeo,

thank you for considerations.

I have eliminated the gap between the bars. That was easy.

I am not able to do the thing with the 5 pip data. In order to let Excel quick and successful calculate the huge amount of data, I have to avoid doing extra calculation.

Here are the steps:

a) download historical data from Dukascopy

b) import them into the calculating spreadsheet

c) calculate kind of Pivot out of OHLC-Values

d) round them to 4 digits for 1pip width or 3 digits for 10 pip width

e) build an Excel Pivot Table with the rounded pivots-data and the volume data. I tried to work with the Excel function "Consolidate", but it seems to have a 64k limit even in Excel 2010 (which is not documented)

f) draw the chart


So when I would like to build 5 pips wide troughs, I would need to work with additional formulas which would slow down the process considerably.


Well, maybe I find a better way for the 5 pips way
