I was reading an article about how the quant hedge funds are like crushing it recently, especially in energy trading.

One of them was Two Sigma, "a $24 billion firm run by a former artificial intelligence academic and a mathematics olympian".

So I thought it was a hoot when I went to their website and found that they listed having a "winner of a major Japanese Backgammon Tournament" as an employee.
I'm not trying to convince anyone. I'm not in the "convincing" business.

Trading often reminds me of when I was learning to play guitar and perform with bands. For quite a while, you sink all this money and time into what you are doing and you still suck. Then you start to get your legs and you get some decent results every once in a while. Then you get to a point where your personality starts to show in your endeavours and you start seeing some good results more often. I got there to a point in my guitar playing, still trying to get there consistently in my trading.

To me, trading is more like chess. It combines strategy and tactics. Also, the more we are able to recognize certain patterns the better we become at responding to what the market gives us; which is also similar to chess. The best chess players are great students and learn many different lines of openings; understanding the main ideas behind each of those openings and lines. In trading, I feel, similar study has to take place in order to reach a "grand master" level. Great analogy!

First you tell me if Chess is like poker, checkers or roulette? or is it that poker is like chess, checkers or roulette? Will I be right in saying that checkers is like chess, poker and roulette? Sometimes I feel that roulette is like chess, poker or checkers. Or is it that trading is yet another form of gambling much similar to whatever gambling game you name. The outcome is uncertain, dependent on several variables, intensity or impact of these factors keeps on changing, rate or spread fluctuate ........................... but the most common thing between any gamble and trading is that many times you feel like shitting in your pants.

Positon size with CHESS figure name :-) and bit of money managment.

Account setup: 3000 base currency , Leverage 1:10
0.01 lot – pawn
0.02 lot – rook - no SL (alike rocky road )!!!! up & down
0.03 lot - knight (hedge 0.03 vs 0.01 then SL(0.01)<TP(0.03) where TP(0.01)=infinity or atlist TP(0.01)=3*TP(0.03)
0.05 lot - bishop - don't play against trend with it
0.07 lot - queen - trailing stop
0.1 lot – king – scalping

Interesting question. I think it depends on what your hypothesis is on how the market behaves. If random walk you might say roulette. If you believe in efficient markets possibly chess.

I think markets these days are manipulated by large players such as central banks and sovereign wealth funds. That's why I would say (b) poker, where the manipulators are the deep stacked players at the table. The rest of us are the small stacks trying to stay alive.

Trading is not chess.
In chess game you have one opponent. In trading the whole market is against you. It's unpredictable, no matter that everybody try to analyze it and to find a regularity. Even when it looks like you trade rule-based, in fact, you're just guessing.
IMHO
So, trading is like gambling for sure.
Almost got it or far far away. Result is the same - you didn't get it!
