Over the weekend I watched a few BBC market inspired shows. I was embarrassed and appalled that this was actually aired on television as a trading related show.

I watched it also.
IMHO it showed a carefully chosen sample of the different types of traders. I was not surprised to see how utterly dismal their attempts are.
We need more shows like this...

r u serious with your DREAM Soros???? sorry but i doubt that.... i cannot understand how someone that SMART enough to figure out "Profitable System" can fall into Cyprus Broker , do you think "if" your dream "come true" then u able to withdrow your money?

my advice, just go to Oanda, Lmax, or Dukascopy

it is possible to make your dream come true.... if u can perform better than this men "GDR3k"

*make sure that your strategy last longer than 30sec-1mnt... because some broker will disable your acc, by reason of latency problem, not enough time to hedge your trade, Arbitrage trading system, etc.....

I agree, as I regularly make 15%+ a month (I do disclaim that I am building an account under $5000) but yes 20% a year and I don't think that you're a very capable trader, or far too cautious (unless you have a million and 20% is plenty..and hey I could live with that!)
Also without some strong psychological whips to keep you motivated you'll get bored and trade without passion!

If you're successful/ lucky enough to have your account balance rise into the $100k+ range, other factors come into play that will force you to alter something, or everything. Your previous 20% monthly result will look a little different from expected.
Despite their claims, most of the ecn brokers will not have the same execution when you try to put an order of 30 or 40 lots on.
If you are filled at all, you will be subject to larger spreads and slippage. Depending on your system, this could mean you have to change it, as you will find scalping for 10-20 pips will yield very different net % results from when you were using orders below 10 lots.

Remember a broker's business model relies on little and often as opposed to large orders. Their liquidity pool access makes successful large lot traders problematic. They are not in the business of going out of business for a successful client. Wherever they can, they will cover themselves from heavy losses at your expense!
Very few if any people will have a million in a single account. Almost certainly an account with more than $100k will not be a standard one. Large lot trading requires negotiation with the broker to get the best possible conditions.....hopefully!

As 2Good2beTrue stated, it's unlikely a small fish Cypriot broker will be sufficient for accounts of any decent size. Usually promises of low spreads are hollow. Better to go with a bigger and/or market making broker who is heavily regulated.
Even then, you will find that aggressive short term scalping...which can be extremely profitable with smaller accounts, will not be practical..so you will be forced to seek more conservative methods...that's when the % per year may fall into the apparently "pathetic" range.

I knew a guy here on FF who made 2% to 6% a day on his account.
But they all leave FF eventually.
Many of us here on FF think all these gains are impossible. WHY?
because we not surrounded with the winners in the first place.
If the stats are 95% dont succeed and 5% succeed in this game who do you think is mainly on FF?

The way i got here was i needed a system. A system that makes money fast.
I was looking for the holy grail.
Google directed me here
go to google and type in most of the indies or systems or EAs and see where it leads.
Most will lead to FF. it reminds me of the picture below

The rare ones that succeed and feel they must help fellow beings will come to FF.
What do you think will happen to them when they tell the masses in FF that theres a light at the end of the tunnel.
The poor chap gets slaughtered. He runs back from the place he came from.
There are alot of good souls here on FF that are here to help.

I believe theres alot of good systems on FF.
Lots that will make you profitable.
But why dont we make money with it?
Simple coz the guy that made that system knew why he made it.
He knew exactly what he is going to look for when he makes that system. he created his own edge
and we go there on the thread we just download all the indies and templates
start trading every signal that we see and expect profits which all turns to losses while he still makes profits.
Then from there we start to tweak the system here and there next minute you using a completely different system altogether that makes you think oh yes now
this will make me the money and the cycle continues.

The programs the brokers have are designed to pick up big accounts and big gains.
Try to stay under the radar by splitting the accounts or even withdrawing the money and not allowing it to go high.
So you make about $500 000 and then anything above that you withdraw and save it in your own bank account.

You do realise these guys have been trading nearly every financial market possible for decades, and they have multi-billion dollar assets under management? There is a huge difference between John Paulson and a guy coming to FF with a few hundred, maybe few thousand dollars in their account.

I'm not saying don't aim high...but be realistic. Set short, medium and long term goals. These goals will be monitored and reviewed as necessary. The road to success is never straight and easy.
It is most likely you wont make a million dollars in a year...does that make you a failure? The Laws of relativity are applicable in most areas, your income will be relative to your assets, time available, discipline etc.

The cycle that repeats in your above post is real...absolutely agree, but most of the reasons for the failures are unrealistic expectations. Picking ideas at random, applying them and not getting what you hoped is common....what is lacking is patience.

As you pointed out, a profitable system for one person, is a losing for another. But for most, instead of analysing, and deciding if the system suits them using a methodical analytical approach, they simply abandon it and move onto the next hottest forum on FF. This way you never learn the thinking behind something, and when to filter out bad trades. Relying on others to think for you is a recipe for failure.

Simply stating that you want to trade you way to millionaire status is useless without the plan, the mindset and the tools to do so.
Optimism is one thing, but experience will teach you the meaning of patience and discipline.
For most the old cliche is true....the definition of winning is being knocked down 50 times, and getting up 51 times.

I like the phrase or sentiment that if you set out just to make money you won't. If you set out to trade really well, be flexible, patient and have lots of endurance then money will come as an afterthought. I have found that as soon as I make spreadsheets showing compounding or figures I get all tensed up and lose my focus on the real game of trading well. However I have moved forward 150% this year (well in the last 6th months) but you have to allow for losses and the occasional stupidity! Don't aim to make a million, aim to beat your inbuilt desire to be stupid and greedy! Then when you are empty of that, you will make the money, but then by that stage it won't be your primary source of happiness!

just a note about losing...
I think it is often ourselves being out own destruction, disbelieving something to be possible just because we haven't see it, setting up our own box/world with its limitations.
if you don't mind a personal example...
until recently I have had mixed success with forex, the best being a 5 months run where I reached +1100%...then got most blew up...a common case.
but this isn't the point.
the point is. I was doing great, but never really had a month 100+%, it was gains from compounding month on month.
not long ago - after some sabbatical and another blown up account some time in the past from 400+% in 1 year - I started to trade once again actively.
reached over 100%+ in a month...and then managed to blew it up...AGAIN!

95% equity gone, decided not to give up, and just for the fun of it, give a go for it as it is left...
and something interesting happened...

I passed my some of my limitations, what I believed to be impossible before, suddenly I realized that it might be only my reality in the past that unconsciously held me back. /alternatively I got lucky/.
the thing is, in the past 2 weeks, I managed to trade that equity up from the DD...not quite at the former balance yet...but not far.
one might be curious to know, it is up about 2000% from the point where that DD took me...yes, 2 weeks!
Granted, leverage is high, but no particularly bigger risk I take than ever before. in fact, if anything, the entries seemed to be improved.
the box I were in is expanded...
even if I might lose this account balance again, something wonderful happened. I have learnt that what I took for impossible, it is in fact possible.
it is sort of deliberating!
well, look, on one TE just today is +150%!!

the lesson is, just because we have hard time, and limit ourselves to some borderies, it doesn't make something impossible!
just as I haven't seen a million $$$ cash, doesn't make it impossible to exist...indeed it sure does...the same goes with trading and returns.
it is disheartening to see that more root for some to lose, then to make it, and arguments about if daily 1% is too much to make, or a possibility.
granted, few can make it big, but it isn't necessarily a fact that the one who makes it big cant be one/any of us!

Great post...so true. How many times have I (and others) done well only to blow ourselves up? Well I have turned the corner because a goal that becomes a dream, complete with an action plan (method, money management etc) becomes HOLY!
The impossible does exist but the 95% will believe it can't be done therefore as you believe you are! Our minds struggle with allowing ourselves to win, maybe we think that we have to work a normal job for it, or something..but for me,,,I believe in the impossible and have thrown away limitations..still work to do but boy am I trading better now I have gotten rid of the biggest box on my trading which was focusing on the money! I loved your post Profit Farmer,,,as there are so many people who will tell you it can't be done...

The only way you can have this type of roller coaster account balance is with unsustainable risk. Any system that has even close to 90% draw down is not a profitable system long term. Sooner or later it will blow the account. It is mathematical fact.
This is not a model to build wealth.

Statistically, the faster the account growth, the more severe the draw down. This is also a fact.
It's better to focus on slower, more regular gains, than huge gains lost in an instant.
It's nice that Profitfarmer has made excellent results...today...but the TE says it all...if you look at it objectively...there is a short period of fantastic wins, followed by decimation of the account. The account is still negative overall. How can this be a source of regular income?!
Does any one really believe this is how the big boys play?! Moreover, is this the path to stable wealth?!

This has nothing to do with not believing, and being programmed to have a "normal job." Success in trading IS possible, and IS achievable.
But the reality of successful trading is not 100% growth in a month...it is wise decisions made consistently for far smaller consistent profits.

The key word is consistent.

Too many people come to this industry seeking a get rich quick scheme, only to be disappointed and disheartened when it doesn't happen that way.
It is possible to make excellent money in Forex, but the get rich quick mentality must be removed for a more realistic approach
